Background Members of the nursing profession face problems in relating knowledge with practice. However, there was no study on the correlation between academic and practice performance of pediatrics nursing in Ethiopia. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted at Mizan-Tepi University using 396 nursing students’ academic and practice achievements on a pediatric nursing course. SPSS version 21.0 was used for analysis. Spearman’s rho correlation (r s ), one way ANOVA, independent t -test and determination coefficient (R 2 ) were computed at p < 0.05. Results The academic performance was strongly correlated with practice performance of the 2015 ( r s (394) = 0.7, p<0.001) and 2017 ( r s (394) = 0.7, p<0.001) batches of regular students. However, there was a moderate correlation between academic and practice performance for the batch of 2016 regular students (r s (394) = 0.43, p<0.001). There was a moderate correlation between academic and practice performance of the 2015 ( r s (394) = 0.6) and 2016 ( r s (394) = 0.51, p<0.001) batches of summer students. Linear regression analysis showed that academic performance explained 17.9% to 44.1% of variability in practice performance of the regular students. The linear regression analysis also showed that academic performance explained 26.5% to 41.2% of the variability in the practice performance of summer students. Independent T -test revealed significant mean performance difference by admission type (academic (t (144.7) = 6.43, p<0.001) and practice (t (115.5) = 5.71, p<0.001)). The mean performance difference significantly varied with sex both at academic (t (394) = 3.38, p=0.001) and practice (t (394) = 4.57, p<0.001) levels. Conclusion There was a moderate to strong correlation between academic and practice performance. In addition to academic performance, variation in practice was also explained by other factors which deserve more study. Enhancing academic performance can further increase practice performance. In general, the achievements of regular and male students at pediatrics was statistically significantly higher than their counterparts. Hence, female and summer nursing students deserve extra support from nurse educators to enhance their performance.

Introducción: El cuidado paliativo se ha convertido en un desafío para los gobiernos por las repercusiones para pacientes, familias y sistemas de salud. La enfermería tiene un rol preponderante en ofrecer una práctica que dé respuesta a las necesidades de los pacientes en situación paliativa, es por este motivo que es necesario avanzar en el análisis de propuestas disciplinares, tal como la de Willis, Grace y Roy, quienes proponen un enfoque central unificador para la disciplina de la enfermería. Metodología: se realizó una revisión exploratoria a través de los siguientes descriptores: cuidado paliativo; enfoque unificador y disciplina de enfermería y sus dimensiones: humanización, significado, elección, calidad de vida y acompañamiento en el proceso de vivir y morir. Al respecto se utilizaron bases de datos, diccionarios, libros de autores icónicos, y páginas de internet relacionadas con la salud en el periodo comprendido entre 2000 y 2020. Se privilegiaron como idiomas el español, el inglés y el portugués. Se analizaron 45 artículos. Resultados: surgieron a partir de las categorías a priori, mencionadas anteriormente, las cuales hacen parte del enfoque unificador disciplinar y que a la vez permiten avanzar en la comprensión de cómo los cuidados paliativos se conciben como parte de ellas, lo que facilitó la reflexión y el avance en propuestas disciplinares desde un componente ontológico. Conclusión: la práctica de enfermería implica aspectos relacionados con: la humanización, el significado, la elección, la calidad de vida y el acompañamiento en el proceso de vivir y morir. Estos aspectos se amplían desde una mirada epistemológica del cuidado, lo que facilita el avance en el entendimiento y en su aplicación. Es prioritario aplicar estos asuntos disciplinares en la práctica del cuidado paliativo, donde la interdisciplinariedad es una necesidad y una realidad.

Previous studies have shown delirium is common in the home setting and can indicate a medical emergency. Many older adults come into the hospital or ER with delirium. However, little is known about the recognition of delirium by home health workers and community nurses. The purpose of this study is to explore the experience of home health (HH) staff caring for an older adult with delirium or delirium superimposed on dementia (DSD), with a focus on capturing rich details of these experiences and their knowledge of recognition and management of delirium. Utilizing story circle methodology, this qualitative study recruited 18 home health care workers from rural Pennsylvania to share their personal experiences in caring for older adults with delirium or DSD. Participants highlighted six key themes: (i) Noticing delirium as a sudden change in behaviors, (ii) Knowing the person with dementia, (iii) Potential causes of delirium, (iv) Fear of delirium and lack of protection for HH staff, (v) Lack of specific protocol and barriers, and (vi) Managing delirium collaboratively with HH staff and family. The findings emphasize the critical role of HH staff in early delirium detection and the necessity of family involvement in patient care. However, the study also highlights the need for improved training and standardized protocols to enhance HH staff’s ability to manage delirium effectively. Addressing these gaps is essential to improve patient outcomes and the quality of care provided in home health settings.
