The aspects of Aspect: Understanding land exposure and its part in geographic information systems analysis

Abstract: One of the hardest terms for students new to geographic information systems to understand is the meaning and application of Aspect. When taking one’s first steps in spatial analysis using data in the form of rasters, the first three things new users are called to learn and use are exporting a digital elevation model, the Slope (land incline) and finally the Aspect (orientation of a slope). While the first two are quite straightforward and easily comprehended even from newcomers to spatial analysis in geographi… Show more

“…With regards to the climatological conditions it was observed that the majority of the sites are located in southern directions (Malaperdas and Panagiotidis 2018), so that maximum sunshine conditions prevailed and the sites were protected from the strong cold north winds.…”

“…Data provided by the aspect analyses of the area in combination with very mild winds suggest a stable environment protected from extreme meteorological conditions. South facing slopes provide higher temperatures with lower humidity creating a better living environment (Malaperdas and Panagiotidis 2018). Despite the moderate and steep sloped terrain of the area walking distances and times are manageable supporting a deliberate connection between the selected areas.…”
