“…To our knowledge, this is the first empirical validation of Kernberg’s ( 1967 ) system for identifying personality pathology in adolescents – that is, that a borderline level of mental functioning associates with borderline and/or narcissistic personality types and that a neurotic level of mental functioning associates with depressive and anxious avoidant subtypes. This organization of psychopathology was recently adapted in a developmental framework to explain how personality pathology in adolescence indicates a higher level of general psychopathology between neurotic and psychotic disorders (Sharp et al ., 2022 ; Sharp & Wall, 2018 , 2021 ), thereby privileging intrapsychic and interpersonal areas of functioning for the diagnosis of personality disorder. These ideas are consistent with new dimensional models of psychopathology as represented in the alternative model of personality disorder (American Psychiatric Association, 2013 ) and the ICD-11 (World Health Organization, 2019).…”

“…In light of the recent consensus that PD is prevalent and often onsets in adolescence (Dalsgaard et al, 2020; Winsper et al, 2020), the ICD-11 and DSM-5 have removed PD diagnosis age limits (American Psychiatric Association, 2022; World Health Organization, 2019). Therefore, the ability to assess maladaptive self and interpersonal functioning will be of great importance in facilitating early diagnosis and intervention efforts for personality pathology in adolescence (Chanen et al, 2017; Sharp et al, 2022; Weekers et al, 2021), a neurocognitively sensitive developmental period (Blakemore, 2008) where self and interpersonal processing can often go amiss to give rise to personality dysfunction (Sharp, 2020).…”

“…Although there has been progress in AMPD measure development in the past decade, there is a noticeable lack of research and measures developed for adolescents and youth (Fossati & Somma, 2021; Shiner, 2022). In addition to improving upon aforementioned issues of the categorical system, a major benefit of shifting toward a dimensional model involves early detection of personality disorder (PD) onset in youth (Sharp et al, 2022). While early detection and prevention efforts were hindered due to controversy about the validity of PD diagnosis in youth, there is now wide consensus that PD onsets in adolescence and can continue to affect mental health well into adulthood and beyond (Dalsgaard et al, 2020; Winsper et al, 2020).…”

“…A recent comprehensive overview has been conducted on instruments designed for assessing personality functioning in adolescents [100]. This review and other attempts to measure the DSM-5-AMPD styles in adolescence [101] might provide the assessment safety and decrease the related controversy.…”
