The assessment of the efficacy of STRs panels recommended by the ISAG for canine pedigrees analysis for forensic casework

Abstract: Canine DNA is widely used in forensic investigations, particularly in dog attacks cases on humans. Nowadays, STR markers are employed worldwide in forensic laboratories to test human and animal genotypes. In the study we analysed the effectiveness of panel – 18 STR as previously recommended by ISAG and the same panel with three additional markers – 21 STR, which has been recommended by ISAG as the core panel for dog identification since 2016. We calculated the PD, PID for these sets of panels and estimated RMP… Show more

“…Thus, the MP value for mixed‐breed dog samples in the study by Kanthaswamy et al. (2018) was 1.25 × 10 −21 , and, in the work of Polish colleagues (Radko et al., 2022), it ranged from 1.25 × 10 −20 (for a standard panel) to 3.5 × 10 −23 (for an extended panel). High MP values are easily explained by the high allelic diversity of dinucleotide markers compared to tetranucleotide repeats.…”

“…Microsatellite analysis was performed on a sample of 223 Kazakh Tazy dogs for 18 microsatellite loci recommended by the International Society for Animal Genetics (ISAG) for dogs [30]. The allele frequencies at these loci were used to assess genetic variability within the population (Table 1).…”
