The association between dietary acid load and body composition in physical education students aged 18–25 years

Abstract: Aim To find the association between dietary acid load (DAL) and body composition in physical education students. Methods This study was carried out on 207 students of both genders aged 18–25 years. DAL was calculated based on potential renal acid load (PRAL) and net endogenous acid production (NEAP) methods. Anthropometric indices were measured. Bioelectric impedance was used to assess body composition and other related items. … Show more

“…As a consequence, females are more sensitive to the effects of diet-dependent acid load (55) . Furthermore, NEAP was observed to have a significant positive association with fat mass in females but not males (56) . Notably, body fatness was indicated to be related to CRC in females (57) .…”

“…Another possible mechanism which may explain the inverse association between DAL and ovarian reserve markers is the potential effect of diet-induced acidosis on increased adiposity. Several previous studies demonstrated the relationship between DAL and obesity measures [ 37 , 38 ]. A 16-week randomized clinical trial on the effect of a plant-based diet with low DAL on body composition and insulin sensitivity on adults with overweight reported a greater reduction in body weight mainly due to a reduction in fat mass and visceral fat in participants on a low DAL diet compared to control group [ 39 ].…”

“…In addition to BMI, several studies report a positive association between high DAL and various other anthropometric measurements. These include an increased waist-to-height ratio, larger hip and neck circumference, a higher fat mass, and lower fat-free mass [ 11 , 96 , 141 , 142 ]. Moreover, a study involving 3018 individuals aged 60 years and older from the USA identified that a high DAL is not only positively correlated with BMI but also with sagittal abdominal diameter [ 142 ].…”
