Objective: To determine the incidence of the main risk factors and also the prevalence of non-carious cervical lesions (NCCL) in relation to sex and age. Methodology: The literature search was conducted using the keywords and MeSH terms “Tooth Cervix”, “Non carious cervical lesions” and “Tooth Wear”, in the MEDLINE databases via PubMed and Scopus. Observational studies were included, which aimed to assess the relationship between sex, age and risk factors with cervical injuries. In addition, only studies in English, from the last five years, in their full version, were selected. Literature reviews, clinical cases, studies that did not include the main observation, studies that deviated from the topic and in other languages were excluded from the research. Results: 441 articles were identified, of which 17 were selected. There was no significant percentage difference between males and females, with percentages of 49% and 51%, respectively. Regarding the prevalence associated with the age group, a higher incidence was observed in the population over 65 years of age (36%). Regarding risk factors, gastroesophageal reflux, parafunctional habits, occlusal disorders and brushing problems were reported, but the acidic diet was the most incident in the literature (in 76.4% of the selected articles). Conclusion: The prevalence of NCCL increases with age, however it does not depend on sex, with an acidic diet being considered a risk factor.

A erosão dentária é um processo crônico, caracterizado pela dissolução química da superfície dental, em decorrência da ação de ácidos de origem intrínseca, extrínseca ou idiopática. Estima-se que esta condição afete, mundialmente, cerca de 30-50% da dentição decídua e 20-45% da permanente. O objetivo deste trabalho foi relatar um caso clínico de erosão dentária moderada associada à alta ingestão de alimentos ácidos e fermantados. Paciente do sexo masculino, leucodermo, 8 anos, compareceu à Clínica de Odontopediatria da Faculdade de Odontologia de Araçatuba para consulta preventiva. Durante a anamnese, constatou-se consumo de refrigerante 2 vezes por semana, suco de frutas ácidas 2 vezes ao dia e bebida láctea açucarada 1 vez ao dia. Ao exame clínico, foi observado ausência de lesões cariosas, tecido gengival sadio, entretanto, havia a presença de fluorose generalizada e desgaste dental erosivo generalizado, com características como brilho excessivo, lisura e lesões do tipo “cupping” na superfície oclusal dos molares decíduos, além de desgaste nas bordas incisais de incisivos e caninos. A conduta clínica imediata envolveu orientação de dieta e higiene aos responsáveis, enfatizando os fatores causais e a característica irreversível do desgaste dental erosivo. Foram realizadas quatro sessões de aplicação tópica de verniz fluoretado. O acompanhamento odontológico infantil e o diagnóstico precoce de desgastes dentários são de suma importância, a fim de minimizar os danos estruturais aos dentes decíduos e também prevenir danos à dentição permanente.

Rett Syndrome is an x linked developmental disorder which becomes apparent in females after 6 to 18 months of age. It leads to severe impairments including loss of speech, loss of hand movements/manual dexterity, characteristic hand movements such as hang wringing and intellectual disability/learning problems. This systematic review was carried out to identify the dental manifestation of Rett syndrome and to shed light on treatment options available for oral health problems associated with Rett syndrome. A systematic literature search was conducted on the PubMed, Scopus, Biomed, Web of Science, Embase, Google Scholars, Cochrane and CINAHL using the following entries: Rett syndrome (n = 3790), Oral health and Rett syndrome (n = 17), dental health of Rett syndrome patients (n = 13), and the MeSH terms listed below: Rett syndrome and Oral Health (n = 17), Rett syndrome and dentistry (n = 29). The final review included 22 search articles. The most common oral findings was bruxism. Masseteric hypertrophy was also reported. Anterior open bite and non-physiological tooth wear was observed. Other oral manifestations of Rett syndrome included mouth breathing, tongue thrusting, digit/thumb sucking, high arch palate. Increased awareness and dental education amongst dentists and assistants regarding the dental manifestations of Rett syndrome and similar neurodevelopmental disorders is required to improve the level of care and empathy they can provide to these differently able patients. Research on dental aspects of Rett is scarce and this remains a neglected topic.
