The association between hyperuricemia and betel nut chewing in Taiwanese men: a cross-sectional study

Abstract: BackgroundStudies have associated betel nut chewing with cancers, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disorders, chronic kidney disease, and proteinuria. This study investigated whether hyperuricemia is associated with betel nut chewing in men who participated in a health check-up program.MethodsFrom hospital records, we identified a total of 11,991 men who participated in the health check-up program from 2003 to 2009. They were divided into hyperuricemic group and non-hyperuricemic group. Laboratory tests, med… Show more

“…Because the β cell function declines with diabetic duration, patients with newly diagnosed drug naive T2DM would be suitable subjects of T2DM study. Hyperlipidemia, an increase of total cholesterol (TC) and/or triglycerides (TGs) in the serum, is one of the most common T2DM related comorbidities [ 6 ]. Diabetic dyslipidemia is characterized by moderately increased TG levels and reduced high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C), which is a well-recognized causes for atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases [ 7 , 8 ].…”

“…The prevalence of T2DM and prediabetes in China was 9.7% and 15.5%, respectively, which implies that there were 92.4 million adults with diabetes and 148.2 million adults with prediabetes [ 1 ]. Hyperlipidemia, one of the most common T2DM related comorbidities, refers to the increase of total cholesterol or/and triglycerides in the serum [ 2 ]. On the one hand, insulin resistance diverts carbohydrate away from muscle glycogen storage into hepatic de novo lipogenesis, thus leading to the increase of plasma triglyceride concentration [ 3 ].…”

“…As far as we know, very few studies have investigated the relationship between betel quid chewing and OA, although betel quid chewing is associated with some well-known disorders. 12 49–51 In vivo data revealed that betel quid extract could intensify the inflammatory response as well as the expression of tumour necrosis factor-α in mice models. 52 Tsai et al 29 indicated that betel quid chewing was not significantly associated with CRP concentration, which agrees with our findings.…”
