The Association Between Prolonged Fatigue and Cardiovascular Disease in World War II Veteran Twins

Abstract: R eports of fatigue preceding cardiac events have recently been confirmed by large prospective studies. To assess for genetic confounding, we investigated prolonged fatigue and cardiovascular disease (CVD) in a cohort of World War II veteran twins. We examined data from a questionnaire mailed to members of the National Academy of Sciences-National Research Council (NAS-NRC) World War II Twins Registry in 1998 and 1999 which included questions on demographics, medical conditions and symptoms of fatigue. Data fr… Show more

“…By inference, similar processes may explain the onset of post-stroke fatigue. Research also showed a significant association between fatigue and cardiovascular disease (CVD), another inflammatory and O&NS disease [194]. There is also an increased incidence of chronic fatigue in hemodialysis patients ('hemodialysis fatigue') [195].…”

“…Patients have described the impact of post-MI fatigue on their ability to carry out even daily activities as “paralyzing,” “restricting,” and “incomprehensible” (Alsen, Brink, & Persson, 2008). However, in many studies examining fatigue in heart disease, researchers have either used unidimensional measures of fatigue (Brink & Grankvist, 2006; Fitzpatrick, Reed, Goldberg, & Buchwald, 2004) or have not clearly reported how the multi-dimensions of fatigue affect outcomes such as PA.…”

“…Few studies investigated the association between fatigue and cardiovascular health in the general population. An early cohort study focused on World War II veteran twins indicated that prolonged fatigue was strongly associated with both risk of MI and CHD after adjustment for traditional risk factors ( 22 ). A large-scale prospective cohort study further revealed that participants with higher fatigue were at greater risk of cardiovascular disease-related death ( 23 ).…”
