The Association between Sarcoidosis and Ischemic Heart Disease—A Healthcare Analysis of a Large Israeli Population

Abstract: (1) Background: Inflammation plays a pivotal role in atherosclerosis, and the association between chronic inflammatory states and ischemic heart disease (IHD) has been shown in several rheumatic diseases. Persistent inflammation might also be a risk factor for IHD in sarcoidosis patients. (2) Methods: Demographic and clinical data of 3750 sarcoidosis patients and 18,139 age- and sex-matched controls were retrieved from the database of Clalit Health Services, Israel’s largest healthcare organization. “…A study conducted by Etinger and colleagues evaluated the mortality rates due to sarcoidosis in comparison to matched controls from 2000 to 2016; the authors found that there was higher mortality with sarcoidosis (17.8% vs. 10.7%, p < 0.001) [38] . Gonen and colleagues reported deaths with a mean follow-up of 68 months among 15% patients with sarcoidosis as opposed to 9% reported for the control group (9%) [39] . Mortality is multifactorial in the cardiac sarcoidosis, with the leading cause of mortality being heart failure, as reported by Yazkai et al [40] .…”

“…The development of atherosclerosis and plaque instability may be aided by inflammation and fibrosis within the artery walls, raising the risk ofACS. 12 It was unexpected, nonetheless, for ACS to develop alongside sarcoidosis. 13 Our diagnosis was supported with initial findings of Nepalese Heart Journal 2024; Vol.…”

“…As proof of the strong relationship between sarcoidosis and CV risk, a recent retrospective cross-sectional study on a large Israeli cohort of 3750 sarcoidosis patients and 18,139 age- and sex-matched controls highlighted that sarcoidosis was associated to ischemic heart disease (adjusted odds ratio 1.5; 95% confidence interval 1.36–1.66) and to increased risk for all-cause mortality compared to controls (adjusted hazard ratio 1.93; 95% confidence interval 1.76–2.13) [ 13 ].…”
