The association between vitamin D and BDNF on cognition in older adults in Southern Brazil

Abstract: OBJECTIVE: To estimate the association between vitamin D and the cognitive decline of older adults and evaluate whether this association is mediated by brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) serum concentration. METHODS: Cross-sectional study nested in a population-based cohort. Of the 604 participants in the complementary examination of the EpiFloripa Study, 576 older adults (60 years or older) were eligible for the study. The outcome is cognitive decline evaluated by the Mini-Mental State Examination, the … Show more

“…A Vitamina D, referida como 25-hidroxi-D, tem sido amplamente estudada como fator neuroprotetor e contribuinte para a prevenção do comprometimento cognitivo (Khairy et al, 2021), visto que níveis insuficientes de Vitamina D, nível igual ou inferior a 30ng/mL, é definida como um fator de risco modificável para demência (Quialheiro et al, 2023). No estudo de Wang et al (2021)…”

“…Due to pathological processes, microglia change its form and initiates a cascade of reactions leading to astrocyte polarization [47,48]. This cascade of reactions contributes to the dysfunction of signaling pathways, such as the brainderived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)/tropomyosin-related kinase B (TrkB)-essential for neurite growth, apoptosis, and synaptic plasticity [49,50]. All positive effects of vitamin D supplementation may contribute to improving anxiety symptoms.…”
