The association of anxiety and stress-related disorders with C-reactive protein (CRP) within UK Biobank

Abstract: Anxiety and stress-related disorders are both common and disabling psychiatric conditions. There are a number of hypotheses suggesting the underlying pathophysiology of these disorders, however, the exact mechanism is unknown. Inflammation has previously been linked with depression and has more recently been suggested as a possible link to anxiety aetiology. The objectives of this study are to assess the relationship between different anxiety/stress-related disorders and inflammation (measured by C-reactive pr… Show more

“…There are also studies which show an association between anxiety and stress-related disorders and higher levels of inflammatory markers, as measured by CRP. 21 , 22 The baseline symptom surveys and PROMIS data showed a significantly higher percentage of subjects with a high severity level of anxiety in Cohort A than in Cohort B or the control cohort. Subjects in Cohort A also reported statistically higher rates of chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, Sjogren’s syndrome, IBS, and general autoimmune illness than subjects in Cohorts B or C.…”

“… 47 CRP is one measure of inflammation associated with cardiovascular disease that is likely influenced by both acute infections and stress exposure over the life course. 48 , 49 , 50 This setting of rural South Africa is a population with both high exposure to chronic stressors and high infectious disease burdens. A high proportion of the HAALSI population has experienced ≥1 traumatic events throughout their life including severe financial hardship, life‐threatening illnesses, death of a close family member/friend from violence, and physical abuse by parents.…”
