Contents Neonatal diseases and losses are a common and often unavoidable problem within breeding kennels. Altogether, morbidity and mortality ranges, according to the literature, from 5 to 35%. Among non‐infectious causes besides hypoxia during birth, hypothermia, hypoglycaemia and dehydration are mostly responsible for puppy diseases and losses. Approximately 90% of all deaths in hypoxaemic pups occur during the first 2 days. Of 183 pups with hypoxia, 63 died, 92.7% of them within 48 h after birth. Among infectious causes, bacterial infection is the most common cause of neonatal mortality. Escherichia coli, streptococci, staphylococci, Pseudomonas sp., Klebsiella sp., Enterobacter sp. and some other micro‐organisms are regularly involved in neonatal infections. Post‐mortem findings especially document E. coli, Staphylococcus sp. and Streptococcus sp. as responsible bacteria. The dam and the environment are suspected as sources of neonatal infections as it was shown by genetic relatedness of responsible bacterial strains isolated in both puppies and their dams. From a total of 517 puppies with bacterial infections, the treatment results documented that parenteral administration of amoxicillin/clavulanic acid in 308 neonates showed the best result. Diagnosis of diseases is often made difficult by the absence of variability in clinical signs contrary to adult dogs. Findings during a physical examination in pups differ from those in adults. Furthermore, treatment recommendations have to meet the special conditions in neonates concerning drug metabolism and excretion.

Background Umbilical cord lactate is one approach to measuring acidosis and intrapartum hypoxia, knowledge of which may be helpful for clinicians involved in the care of women and newborns.Objective To synthesise the evidence on accuracy of umbilical cord lactate in measuring acidosis and predicting poor neonatal outcome.Search strategy Studies published and unpublished between 1990 and 2014 from PubMed/Medline, EMBASE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and clinicaltrials.gov were assessed.Selection criteria Cross-sectional and randomised studies that assessed fetal acidosis (using lactate as the index test) with or without an assessment of neonatal outcome.Data collection and analysis Correlations between index and reference test(s) were recorded, as were the raw data to classify the predictive ability of umbilical lactate for neonatal outcomes. Metaanalysis of correlation was performed. We plotted estimates of the studies' observed sensitivities and specificities on Forest plots with 95% confidence intervals (CI). Where possible, we combined data using meta-analysis, applying the hierarchical summary receiver operating characteristics model and a bivariate model.Main results Twelve studies were included. Umbilical lactate correlated with pH [pooled effect size (ES) À0.650; 95% CI À0.663 to À0.637, P < 0.001], base excess (ES À0.710; 95% CI À0.721 to À0.699, P < 0.001), and Apgar scores at 5 minutes (ES 0.300; 95% 0.193-0.407, P < 0.001). Umbilical lactate had pooled sensitivity and specificity for predicting neonatal neurological outcome including hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy of 69.7% (95% CI 23.8-94.4%) and 93% (95% CI 86.8-96.3%).Authors' conclusion Umbilical cord lactate is a clinically applicable, inexpensive and effective way to measure acidosis and is a tool that may be used in the assessment of neonatal outcome.

Background Brazelton scale was designed to assess neonataladaptive behavior, a newborn infant’s ability to interact with envi-ronmental stimuli. It can be used as a screening tool to detect aninfant’s deviant behavior.Objective To assess the adaptive behavior of asphyxiated full-termnewborn infants compared to that of non-asphyxiated newborns.Methods A cross sectional analytic study was conducted from March2003 until March 2004. Subjects were allocated into two groups(non asphyxiated and asphyxiated infants) and enrolled consecu-tively. The evaluation was done twice, at the age of 3-7 days and 1month. A p value of <0.05 was considered statistically significant.Results Forty eight newborn infants in each group were compared.There were no characteristic differences between the groups. Atthe first evaluation, non asphyxiated infants scored better on mo-tor (p=0.015), reflex (p=0.000), habituation (p=0.022), and social-interaction (p=0.020) than asphyxiated infants did. At the age of 1month, motor (p<0.0001), reflex (p<0.0001), habituation(p<0.0001), state organization (p<0.0001), and social-interaction(p=0.045) were also better in non-asphyxiated infants.Conclusion Assesment by the Brazelton scale showed that theadaptive behavior of full-term asphyxiated newborn infants wasdifferent from that of non-asphyxiated infants
