The association of single and combined factors of sedentary behavior and physical activity with subjective cognitive complaints among community-dwelling older adults: Cross-sectional study

Abstract: Subjective cognitive complaints (SCC) might be a meaningful indicator of dementia onset or mild cognitive impairment, and identifying the related factors of SCC could contribute to preventing these diseases. However, the relationship between SCC and lifestyle factors remains largely unproven. The purpose of this study was to examine the association of type of sedentary behavior, physical activity, or their combination with SCC among community-dwelling older adults. In 2016, 6677 community-living elderly were r… Show more

“…The prevalence of SCD (KCL-CF ≥ 1) among subjects in this study was 35.4%. Previously, the prevalence of SCD among Japanese, community-dwelling older adults was reported as 32.5% [ 34 ], 34.5% [ 50 ], 34.9% [ 35 ], and 37.6% [ 51 ]. Regarding the response frequencies for the lower order questions, the prevalence of affirmative answers to, “Do your family or your friends point out your memory loss?” and, “Do you find yourself not knowing today’s date?” was high, whereas that for, “Do you make a call by looking up phone numbers?” was low.…”

“…SCD morbidity (i.e., KCL-CF score ≥ 1) was found in 35.3% of our study population. This rate has been variously estimated in prior research on community-dwelling older adults at 32.5% [ 28 ], 34.5% [ 36 ], 34.9% [ 29 ], 35.4% [ 37 ], and 37.6% [ 38 ]. Moreover, high response rate to options that suggest SCD was recorded for the following questions: “Do your family or your friends point out your memory loss?” and “Do you find yourself not knowing today’s date?”.…”

“…These questions were “Do your family or friends point out your memory loss?”, “Do you make a call by looking up phone numbers?”, and “Do you find yourself not knowing today’s date?” [ 26 ]. In previous research, the KCL-CF has been used as a measure of subjective memory complaints [ 27 ], subjective cognitive complaints [ 28 ], and self-reported cognitive decline [ 29 ]. In this study, however, we used the KCL-CF as a measure of the participants’ SCD status.…”
