“…(53) In the Health ABC cohort, the urinary AGE pentosidine was associated with increased incidence of clinical fractures (HR 1.42; 95% CI, 1.10 to 1.83; for 1 SD increase in log pentosidine) and increased prevalence of vertebral fractures (adjusted odds ratio, 5.93; 95% CI, 2.08 to 16.94; for 1 SD increase in log pentosidine) in subjects with T2D, but not in those without diabetes. (54) Urinary pentosidine dosage has been inconsistently associated with fracture risk in other studies (54)(55)(56)(57) ; therefore, direct quantification of bone AGE content remains the gold standard, although not feasible in large cohorts.…”

“…Routine biochemical data were obtained by respective in-house laboratories. Urinary PEN level was determined by an ELISA method 6,18 without the need for sample pre-treatment with heat hydrolysis; this method was preferred over PEN measurement in serum samples, which would have required heat hydrolysis and possible inclusion of artificial error. The assay performance of this ELISA system for urinary PEN was reported previously 18 .…”

“…However, bone quality, in term of tissue material properties, has not been investigated in patients with CLD. Among several risk factors for fractures, prevalent fractures are especially significant in predicting the occurrence of further fragility fractures [17]. Therefore, the present study focused on bone quality and aimed to clarify its involvement in prevalent fractures among patients with CLD.…”

“…Prevalent fragility fractures were defined as a history of fractures of the vertebra, proximal portion of the humerus and femur, distal portion of the radius, lower extremity, rib, or pelvis, which occurred after the age of 40 years [17]. Prevalent vertebral fractures, including asymptomatic fractures diagnosed only by radiography, were semi-quantitatively assessed using lateral thoracolumbar spine radiographs [25].…”
