The ATLAS TRT end-cap detectors

Abstract: The ATLAS TRT end-cap is a tracking drift chamber using 245,760 individual tubular drift tubes. It is a part of the TRT tracker which consist of the barrel and two end-caps. The TRT end-caps cover the forward and backward pseudo-rapidity region 1.0 < |η| < 2.0, while the TRT barrel central η region |η| < 1.0. The TRT system provides a combination of continuous tracking with many measurements in individual drift tubes (or straws) and of electron identification based on transition radiation from fibers or foils … Show more

“…The barrel section, where 52,544 straws are aligned parallel to the direction of the beam axis, covers the radial region 560 < r < 1080 mm and the longitudinal region |z| < 712 mm [14]. Two end-cap sections, each with 122,880 straws that are aligned perpendicular to the beam axis and point outwards in the radial direction, cover the regions 644 < r < 1004 mm and 827 < |z| < 2744 mm [15]. The TRT acceptance range is |η| < 2.0.…”

“…The straws in the barrel region are arranged in three cylindrical layers and 32 φ sectors; they have split anodes and are read out from each side [9]. The straws in the endcap regions are radially oriented and arranged in 80 wheellike modular structures [10]. The TRT straw layout is designed so that charged particles with transverse momentum p T > 0.5 GeV and with pseudorapidity |η| < 2.0 cross typically more than 30 straws.…”
