The Atmospheric Infrared Sounder Version 6 cloud products

Abstract: The Version 6 cloud products of the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) and Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit (AMSU) instrument suite are described. The cloud top temperature, pressure, and height and effective cloud fraction are now reported at the AIRS field of view (FOV) resolution. Significant improvements in cloud height assignment over Version 5 are shown with pixel-scale comparisons to cloud vertical structure observed by the CloudSat 94 GHz radar and the Cloud-Aerosol LIdar with Orthogonal Polari… Show more

“…Land retrievals require further investigation for climate research. For the water vapour climate record the passive microwave TCWV record has not yet been demonstrated Li et al, 2000;Kahn et al, 2014). The intercalibration of the HIRS record is still continuing (e.g.…”

“…The horizontal resolution along the track is c. 50 km and the spatial resolution of the AIRSAdvanced Microwave Sounding Unit at the nadir view is 13.5 km (http://airs.jpl.nasa.gov/) [18]. The outgoing longwave radiation of the AIRS product was used in this study.…”

“…The Microwave Limb Sounder Version 4 product, released in 2 Advances in Meteorology 2015 (https://mls.jpl.nasa.gov/), has led to a great improvement in data quality in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere [18,19] and provides a good opportunity to understand the fine structure of the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere in a penetrating MCC. Satellite remote sensing and model simulation, together, can complement each other nicely to study the unique upper troposphere and lower stratosphere structure in a rare penetrating MCC.…”

“…This was a dramatically different measurement obtained from thermal infrared spectra with a coarse 13.5 km footprint rather than reflected solar energy. We filtered clouds using an 5 AIRS sensitivity threshold (Effective Cloud Fraction, or ECF) of 0.1 (Kahn et al, 2014), and binned AIRS phases by latitude and season for direct comparison.…”

“…We show seasonal and latitudinal changes of cloud thermodynamic phase, comparing them to measurements by NASA's Atmospheric Infrared Sounder, AIRS (Kahn et al, 2014). Hyperion also provides two novel contributions beyond prior records.…”
