The Auditory P300 at or near Threshold

Abstract: Psychophysical and P300 (P3) thresholds and suprathreshold measures were obtained in 16 normal-hearing subjects. Subjects followed a classic oddball paradigm using 1000 (frequent) and 2000 Hz (rare) tones as stimuli. The P3 was obtained for all 16 subjects at or 5 dB above their behavioral threshold. The P3 was obtained more often at behavioral threshold and 5 dB SL than N1 and P2 late potentials. The P3 was larger in amplitude than either the N1 or the P2 at threshold and for 75 dB SPL stimuli. In comparing P… Show more

“…It may be argued that the “principal frequency” of the ERP is higher when stimuli are presented at supra-threshold levels (Musiek et al, 2005; Garinis and Cone-Wesson, 2007), so that phase distortion might not affect the δ-range. Also, in a passive listening condition, the P300 might be smaller than in an active listening condition (Polich, 2007), so that in data from the former condition the “oscillatory” component of the ERP might not affect phase estimation at tone onset by acausal algorithms as strongly as in our data.…”

“…If P3AERP truly represents an endogenous potential, the P3AERP amplitudes and latencies should be similar at suprathreshold and threshold levels. P3AERP waveforms have been shown to be larger in amplitude and shorter in latency at suprathreshold levels (75 dB SPL) compared to threshold levels [16]. In the current study, P3AERP amplitudes were found to be reduced with competing noise, reflecting that there may be more than just an endogenous aspect to components of the P3AERPs.…”

“…P3AERPs are typically considered to be endogenous potentials that are influenced more by internal (subject-related) factors than external (stimulus-related) factors [8,15]. However, several studies have also shown that stimulus-related factors (e.g., frequency and intensity) can significantly influence latency and amplitude of P3AERPs [16][17][18][19].…”
