“…Sequence analysis of the p74 gene region also revealed the presence of an ORF (Cf-xiv) containing 315 nucleotides with a homology to the baculoviral fibrillin proteins. This protein owes its name to its fibrillar structure (van Oers and Vlak, 1997), and is located adjacent to the p74 gene, which encodes a highly conserved viral envelope protein. The presumed ChfuGV fibrillin gene codes a 104 amino acid protein with a molecular weight equal to 11811 Da.…”

“…With ClustalW, nl53 showed the highest amino acid identity to the Epiphyas postvittana MNPV (36) P10, but this was only 13.8%. Amino acid identity, however, is usually low for P10 proteins, and AcMNPV P10, for example, shares only 20.1% amino acid identity with SpltMNPV P10 (65). We cannot, therefore, rule out the possibility that nl53 may be a P10 homologue.…”

“…P10 is a very late protein that is generally poorly conserved at the amino acid level, but its size, hydrophilicity distribution, and secondary structure are conserved (72). Four structural domains implicated in various functions are usually found, including a coiled-coil domain at the amino-terminal end, followed by a proline-rich domain, a variable region not found in all P10s, and a positively charged carboxy terminus often containing serine or threonine residues (63,64,65,68). Known P10 proteins range in size from 70 aa for Bombyx mori NPV (BmNPV) (25) to 105 aa for SpltMNPV (50) and are usually located between p26 and p74 (65).…”

“…A phosphorylated protein encoded by the pep (polyhedral envelope protein) gene is a structural component of this envelope (Whitt & Manning, 1988). Also, the p10 gene appears to be involved in the formation of the calyx, though it is not itself a component of the calyx (Van Oers & Vlak, 1997). The calyx appears to lend physical stability to the OBs, but it has also been speculated that the calyx serves to delimit the boundaries of OBs and define their shape (Eason et al, 1998).…”
