The Basic Psychological Needs at Work Scale: Measurement Invariance between Canada and France

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to develop and validate the Basic Psychological Needs at Work Scale (BPNWS) in French, but items are also provided in English in the article. The BPNWS is a work-related self-report instrument designed to measure the degree to which the needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness, as identified by Self-Determination Theory (Deci & Ryan, 2000), are satisfied at work. Using exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, the first study examines the structure of the BPNWS in a grou… Show more

“…Most work-related measures of basic psychological need satisfaction used in previous studies are ad hoc instruments with lacking evidence of their validity (Brien et al, 2012). An exception is the scale constructed by Van den Broeck et al (2010), but as Brien et al (2012) point out, this scale also has certain weaknesses concerning the operationalization of some of the constructs.…”

“…Each item was rated on a 6-point scale ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 6 (strongly agree). This scale had been previously validated with French and Canadian samples (Brien et al, 2012) Scheier et al's (1994) Life Orientation Test-Revised (e.g., "Overall, I expect more good things to happen to me than bad"). Each item was rated on a 6-point scale ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 6 (strongly agree).…”
