The bees of Michigan (Hymenoptera: Apoidea: Anthophila), with notes on distribution, taxonomy, pollination, and natural history

Abstract: The state of Michigan occupies an area between the Great Plains and the northeastern United States, bordering four Great Lakes, with diverse biogeographical regions. Michigan also has the second most diverse agriculture in the country, with many crops that depend on bees for pollination. This unique combination provides a wide range of opportunities for bees to persist, yet there is no current published checklist of these important insects. This study was conducted to provide the first annotated checklist of t… Show more

“…Sampling locations and dates can be found in Appendix S1: Table S1. These surveys aimed to replicate the historical baseline provided by R. R. Dreisbach, who collected thousands of bee specimens across Michigan in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s, but his surveys were casual in nature and he only recorded locality data at the county level (Gibbs et al 2017). A breakdown of the number of records from each of these sources can be found in Appendix S1: Table S2.…”

“…Ten bee species were selected (Table , Figure ) based on their range of traits and abundance in collections from each region (Gibbs, Ascher, Rightmyer, & Isaacs, ). To control for other factors that may covary with landscape simplification (e.g.…”

“…HOST RECORDS: Epeolus ainsliei has been collected with possible host species Colletes susannae Swenk in Birds Hill Provincial Park (Gibbs et al 2017) and Spruce Woods Provincial Park (J. Gibbs, personal communication, 2017), Manitoba, Canada and Spring Green Preserve in Sauk County, Wisconsin, USA (Wolf and Ascher 2009). In all cases at least one other species of Colletes was observed at the same locality and time as C. susannae and E. ainsliei , but observations of other Colletes were limited to one or two localities.…”
