“…Of 150 insect species reported from the Antipodes Islands (ca. 49 • S) (Marris 2000), Coleoptera comprise only 25 species in 13 families. In comparison, the Snares Islands (48 • S) have a reported 25 species in 14 families; the Bounty Islands (ca.…”

“…In vagile taxa, such as the bryophytes and lichens, endemism tends to be low (acknowledging that further survey and taxonomic work might change the situation; Øvstedal & Gremmen 2001;Muñ oz et al 2004), while in insects, it is more variable. In islands close to continental or other landmasses genera and sometimes species are shared with what appears to be the source areas (Kuschel 1971;Vogel 1985;Marris 2000), while in more distant archipelagos, endemism is high and relationships are enigmatic. Indeed, the origin and closest relatives of many of the insect taxa from the South Indian Ocean Province Islands (Prince Edward Islands, Crozet Islands, Kerguelen Islands, Heard and McDonald Islands) remain a subject of vigorous contention, as they have been since the discovery of these species (see Jeannel 1964 for early discussion and Greve et al 2005 for recent partial review).…”

“…The subantarctic flora and fauna are a mixture of endemics and taxa related to the closest continental areas (Morrone 1998). Here, we report for the first time phylogenetic evidence for a geographic connection with the Northern Hemisphere in a flightless insect, the staphylinid beetle Baeostethus chiltoni Broun (=Leptusa chiltoni (Broun)) recorded previously from the Antipodes and Campbell islands (Steel 1964;Marris 2000).…”
