The behavior of some chalcones on acetylcholinesterase and carbonic anhydrase activity

Abstract: Carbonic anhydrase (CA) has a key role in respiration, carbon dioxide and bicarbonate transport. Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) is a serine hydrolase and mostly abundant at neuromuscular junctions and cholinergic brain synapses. Inhibitors of these enzymes could aid in illuminating the role in disease processes. In this study, we separately purified CA I and CA II from human erythrocytes. The purity of the enzymes was showed by SDS-PAGE analysis. We also investigated the inhibition of seven chalcones toward hCA I… Show more

“…The BChE enzyme hydrolyzes choline ester compounds and various ester molecules. It is called pseudo‐ChE . In the nervous system, AChE is a significant member, so any negative effects on AChE efficiency may cause neurotoxicity .…”

“…These enzymes are still widely evaluated due to the biomedical application of their inhibitor compounds and also they are a terrific example of convergent progress, with seven genetically distinct CA families that evolved independently in archaea, bacteria, and eukarya, the α‐, β‐, γ‐, δ‐, η‐, ζ‐, and θ‐CAs. CA isoenzymes are also among the most effective enzymes recorded in nature, maybe due to the reality that uncatalyzed CO 2 hydration is a very slow process at neutral pH, and the physiologic demands for its conversion to ionic, soluble species (ie, protons and bicarbonate) are very high …”

“…The results displayed that novel synthesized isoindole‐1,3‐dione substituted sulfonamide derivatives were a potent inhibitor for hCA isoenzymes. hCA inhibitors have been employed for the treatment of high‐altitude sickness, cancer, epilepsy, glaucoma, and obesity …”
