The Benefit of Innovative Taxi Concepts: The Impact of Airport Size, Fleet Mix and Traffic Growth

Abstract: Various technologies and concepts have been developed recently in order to reduce fuel consumption and emissions of aircraft during taxi. In this study four innovative concepts are investigated regarding their potential fuel savings: electric taxiing, operational towing, single-engine taxiing, and minimization of taxi times through improved operations (e.g. by using planning tools). For this purpose models are introduced to estimate future development of taxi times, to forecast traffic growth and the associate… Show more

“…NASA and others have developed and shown that SVS technologies provide significant improvements in terrain awareness and reductions for the potential of Controlled-Flight-Into-Terrain incidents/accidents, 3,4 improvements in flight technical error to meet Required Navigation Performance criteria, [7][8][9] and improvements in situation awareness without increased workload compared to current generation cockpit technologies. [10][11][12] As such, SVS, often displayed on a head-down display (HDD), is emerging as standard equipage for Part 23 and Part 25 flight decks even though, to date, no operational credit is obtained from equipage.…”

“…2,3 This contribution to delay is expected to continue, if not increase. 4 One significant challenge for EVO is the definition of required equipage on the aircraft and on the airport. With today's equipment and regulations, significant investment is required in on-board equipment for navigation, surveillance, and flight control and on the airport for precision guidance systems and approach lighting systems for "all-weather" landing capability (i.e., Category III operations to all runway ends).…”

“…2,3 The landing gear (LG) of aircraft with ETS is equipped with powered wheels which are actuated by electric traction motors with high torque density. The benefits of ETS [4][5][6] include saving of fuel burn and repair costs, reduction of carbon emission and noise pollution, improvement of safety on apron and optimization of precision maneuvering, and so on.…”
