The Benefits of Exercise and Metabolic Interventions for the Prevention and Early Treatment of Alzheimer's Disease

Abstract: Studies have highlighted the potential of physical activity to improve overall brain health, which could delay or lessen AD-related cognitive deficits and pathology. Physical activity influences cognitive function, vascular health and brain metabolism, which taken together offers benefits for the aging population, including AD patients.

“…Improvements in brain function, cognition [7,8], and even brain structural volumes have been noticed with aerobic activity interventions [9]. PA also protects against the development of neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease [10], and has been shown to improve cognitive function in Alzheimer's patients [11]. There is also evidence of a relationship between PA and positive effects on mood and anxiety, including decreases in the risk of incident depression [12] and improved symptoms in persons with pre-existing depression or anxiety [13][14][15][16][17].…”

“…Lower risks of AD have been reported in cultures with a traditional high-fiber cuisine, such as those in Sub-Saharan Africa, as well individuals adhering to the Mediterranean, or Mediterranean-DASH Diet Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND) diets [ 65–68 ]. Exercise contributes to vascular health, which has a positive impact on BBB in aging [ 69 ]. Lactate, created during exercise, is another fuel that can traverse the BBB via monocarboxylate transporters that are independent of GLUT1 and the BBB’s age-related changes [ 70, 71 ].…”

“…It is possible for at risk individuals to prevent or delay AD by addressing these factors. There has been abundant and compelling evidence showing its feasibility (Love and Miners, 2016 ; Maliszewska-Cyna et al, 2017 ).…”
