The Bergen 4-Day Treatment (B4DT) for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Outcomes for Patients Treated After Initial Waiting List or Self-Help Intervention

Abstract: The Bergen 4-day treatment (B4DT) for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) was recently tested in a randomized controlled trial, where the results showed that the B4DT was more effective than a self-help intervention (SH) and a waiting list condition (WL). Patients in the SH and WL condition still in need of treatment after the first intervention (N = 26; 13 from each condition) were offered the B4DT. None of the patients declined participation, and there were no dropouts. At post-treatment 59.5% were in remiss… Show more

“…The secondary measures also showed a significant reduction in symptoms of anxiety (GAD-7) and depression (PHQ-9) from pre-treatment to post- and follow-up. This is in line with previous findings on B4DT for PD [ 16 ] and for B4DT treatment for OCD [ 14 , 15 , 18 , 19 , 27 ]. It should also be noted that all patients completed the treatment.…”

“…The aim of this study was to examine if the promising effects from the pilot study on the B4DT for PD with or without agoraphobia is transferable to a new clinic. We hypothesized that there would be no significant differences between the current study and the previously published pilot study on B4DT for PD, based on previous studies on implementation of B4DT on OCD in new clinics [ 18 , 19 ].…”

“…The rates of remission were 62.5, 6.3, and 0%, respectively. For the 26 patients who were treated with the B4DT after initial self-help or waiting list, 59.5% were in remission at post-treatment, 31.0% had treatment response, and 9.5% showed no change ( 23 ). At 3-month follow-up for these 26 patients, 71.4% were in remission, 19.0% had treatment response, and 9.5% showed no change.…”

“…Two patients had improved and four patients were not interested in further treatment. Therefore, a total of 42 patients eventually received the B4DT either as initial treatment or after SH or WL [see ( 23 ) for further details].…”

“…Patients receive individual treatment in a group setting. The B4DT demonstrated promising treatment outcomes ( 11 15 ). Studies investigating the long-term outcome, report a recovery rate around 70% at 1- and 4-year follow-up ( 16 , 17 ).…”
