Outpatient Therapists’ Perspectives on Working With Persons Who Are Sexually Interested in Minors

“…All participants were then asked (yes/no) whether they referred MAPs for whom they could not or would not like to offer treatment to a different treatment institution. If a therapist indicated having redirected a patient or patients, we used the abovementioned seven-point Likert scale to inquire where patients were referred to: (a) MAP-specific treatment options (i.e., akin to the German Prevention Project Dunkelfeld ; Beier et al, 2021 ), (b) forensic programs such as forensic outpatient treatment centers, (c) psychiatric colleagues, (d) neurological colleagues, and (e) therapists specialized in treatment of sexual problems. Therapists who did not refer MAPs to other institutions were asked whether they would like to refer MAPs they cannot offer a treatment opportunity to other therapists but did not know about suitable places (yes/no).…”

Intervention Needs in Prison With Pedophile Inmates

“…Por otro lado, las personas con pedofilia pueden sentirse incomprendidas y desesperanzadas (Heasman, y Foreman, 2019), y rara vez encuentran foros asistenciales sobre su deseo sexual. Esto favorece los sentimientos de soledad, un factor de riesgo para la reincidencia (Herrero, 2013); por lo que parece necesario que la intervención terapéutica incluya una parte de psicoeducación sobre pedofilia, punto fundamental de terapias internacionales como el BEDIT (Beier et al, 2021) no incluido en el PCAS. Esta información podría incluir tres ideas fundamentales: sentir atracción por menores no es una elección del sujeto y resulta inmodificable (Seto, 2017;Beier, 2013); aceptar no implica aprobar, es decir, aceptar el interés sexual por menores significa asumir su preferencia sabiendo que es inmutable (Herrero, 2018), pero no aprobarla, ya que su ejecución genera víctimas; y diferenciar entre pedofilia como atracción y pederastia como acción, para plantear la posibilidad de aceptar la atracción pero comprometerse a no ejercerla.…”

“…También puede ser interesante detectar las conductas disexuales, término no oficial empleado por el Proyecto Dunkenfeld (Beier et al, 2021) referido a actos no ilegales considerados socialmente aceptados (ej., hacer cosquillas a un menor), pero que el sujeto realiza para satisfacer su placer sexual (ej., excitarse), si bien al desvelarse la motivación subyacente a su acto, la sociedad condenaría el comportamiento. Estas conductas pueden reforzar pautas no deseables próximas a la conducta ilícita (Beier, 2013), y no se encuentren recogidas en los manuales al uso ni en el PCAS.…”

“…En el momento de la evaluación llevaba cumplidos 3 años y 7 meses de 8 años de condena. Mediante una entrevista semiestructurada ad hoc, incluyendo varias medidas según la variable a estudiar (ver Anexo con información metodológica específica sobre las pruebas empleadas), se evaluaron las áreas consideradas factores de riesgo individuales para la comisión de delitos sexuales (Brennan et al, 2018;Herrero, 2018;Marshall et al, 2011;Szumski et al, 2018) y que recoge el programa BEDIT (Beier et al, 2021): área psicosocial (autoestima, presencia de ideación suicida y distorsiones cognitivas), área interpersonal (relaciones sociales y emocionales) y área sexual (victimización, fantasías y conductas sexuales, consumo de material abusivo).…”

The Impact of a Public Health Campaign to Deter Viewing of Child Sexual Abuse Images Online: A Case Study of the UK Stop It Now! Campaign

“…While it may be valuable to specifically target individuals who are at high risk of perpetrating abuse, there are challenges in identifying those individuals: research has explored demographic and psychological characteristics of online child sexual abuse image viewers (e.g., Babchishin et al, 2015), but studies are mostly conducted with individuals who have been convicted, representing a potentially biased sample. People with a sexual interest in children are considered at significant risk of accessing online child sexual abuse images (Beier et al, 2016); this argument underpins Prevention Project Dunkelfeld, an initiative in Germany to encourage individuals who have not been legally reprimanded, but who identify as having a sexual interest in children or adolescents, to access professional help (Beier et al, 2021). Some individuals convicted of online child sexual abuse image offences, however, cite curiosity or accidental viewing as their starting point for looking at these images (Morgan & Lambie, 2019;Seto et al, 2010;Winder et al, 2015), though these accounts may represent a level of post-event rationalization of the behavior.…”
