The present study investigates beliefs, attitudes and practices of 101 monolingual and multilingual therapists in their interactions with multilingual patients. We adopted a mixed-method approach, using an on-line questionnaire with 27 closed questions which were analysed quantitatively and informed questions in interviews with one monolingual and two multilingual therapists. A principal component analysis yielded a four-factor solution accounting for 41% of the variance. The first dimension, which explained 17% of variance, reflects therapists' attunement towards their bilingual patients (i.e., attunement versus collusion). Further analysis showed that the 18 monolingual therapists differed significantly from their 83 bi-or multilingual peers on this dimension. The follow up interviews confirmed this result. Recommendations based on these findings are made for psychotherapy training and supervision to attend to a range of issues including: the psychological and therapeutic functions of multi/bilingualism; practice in making formulations in different languages; the creative therapeutic potential of the language gap.

'Het is (...) het verlies van de taal waarin men leefde en dacht en die men nooit zal kunnen vervangen door een andere, ondanks alle pogingen zich erin in te leven' (Sigmund Freud in ballingschap aan Ferdinand de Saussure; geciteerd in Gay, 1988, p. 571).In psychotherapie met tweetalige clie¨nten heeft codeswitching (overschakelen op de tweede taal) talige en therapeutische gevolgen. Er kunnen zich taaltechnische moeilijkheden voordoen op het gebied van fonologie, woord-en taalgebruik. Daarnaast kan het nieuw verworven taalsysteem fungeren als een controlemechanisme en/of als een nieuw referentiekader voor het zelf. Deze functies kunnen tot gevolg hebben dat code-switching de toegang tot taalafhankelijke ervaringen belemmert. Psychotherapie in de tweede taal kan voor de behandelaar beperkingen en mogelijkheden cree¨ren op het gebied van overdracht, tegenoverdracht en techniek. InleidingMeer dan tien jaar geleden begon ik als psycholoog, afkomstig uit Iran, met getraumatiseerde vluchtelingen te werken. Later breidden mijn behandelcontacten zich uit naar andere allochtone bevolkingsgroepen. De voertaal in deze contacten was veelal een voor de clie¨nt tweede taal, wat het behandelproces compliceerde.Communicatieproblemen in therapie met allochtonen zijn inmiddels een bekend gegeven (Dahl, 1989;Van der Veer, 1993, Perez Foster, 2001).Dit artikel is gebaseerd op mijn werk met allochtonen die op latere leeftijd Nederlands of Engels als tweede taal gingen beheersen. In het navolgende zal aandacht worden besteed aan het onderwerp 'tweetaligheid'. Ik zal een onderdeel wijden aan de historische achtergronden van het belang van dit onderwerp voor de psychotherapie. Vervolgens beschrijf ik enkele taaltechnische moeilijkheden die zich in de psychotherapie manifesteren op het gebied van fonologie, woord-en taalgebruik. Daarna worden de taalafhankelijke verschijnselen uiteengezet die zich in psychotherapie met tweetaligen kunnen voordoen. De tweede taal kan fungeren als een communicatief-therapeutisch middel, als een controlemechanisme, als basis voor een nieuw zelf en referentiekader, en als factor die de toegang tot taalafhankelijke herinneringen bemoeilijkt. In de laatste paragraaf van deze bijdrage wordt het belang van de tweede taal vanuit de psychotherapeutische relatie en techniek beschreven met aanbevelingen voor de behandelaar.

Universidad de Palermo.Recibido 9-12-2013 | Aceptado 17-02-2014 ResumenLa literatura sobre el proceso psicoterapéutico en individuos bilingües sugiere que el bilingüismo de una persona puede afectar el proceso y/o el resultado del mismo. El incremento de la migración mundial ha dado como consecuencia la presencia de miles de individuos en países donde no se habla su lengua nativa y considerando que muchos de ellos pueden llegar a necesitar servicios psicológicos, este artículo explora ciertos fenómenos asociados con el bilingüismo que tienen importantes implicaciones para la tarea psicoterapéutica. Nuestro objetivo es establecer con claridad las razones por las cuales consideramos de gran importancia que el terapeuta trabajando con pacientes bilingües esté familiarizado y en el tratamiento de los mismos. Además, deseamos contribuir a ampliar la preguntas de posible consideración en futuros estudios sobre este tema.Palabras Clave: Migración -Bilingüismo -Fenómenos -Psicoterapia.
