“…In the series of cis-[Ru(bpy) 2 (NO)X] n+ complexes, the backbonding in {Ru-NO} 6 (Ru II -NO + ), and the electron density on the nitrosyl ligand augments with increasing σ-and π-donor character of the X ligand under the metal ion, and results in a decrease of the E 1 (NO + /NO 0 ) and ν NO similar to that in trans-tetrammine complexes (vide supra). In aqueous solution, chemical reduction of the cis/trans-[Ru(bpy) 2 (NO)X] n+ 168,169,170,171,172,173 as well as related complexes [Ru(tpy)(NO)L] n+ 174 (tpy = terpyridine) released NO, as attested by measurement with an NO sensor. The k-NO rate constants were similar for the whole group but generally lower than those for the tetrammines.…”

“…Employing compounds that display relatively low thermal reactivity and that could act as NO delivery agents upon external stimulation could emerge as a new approach to cancer treatment. It has been reported that nitrosylruthenium complexes can act as NO delivery agents upon irradiation with light, which could be useful in cancer therapy studies . Recently, our research team found that the irradiation of an aqueous solution containing [Ru(NH 3 ) 5 (pyrazine)] 2+ ( I ) and trans ‐[RuCl([15]aneN 4 )NO] 2+ ( II ; Figure ) with light in the region of 450 nm produces singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) and NO, respectively , .…”
