The Bioactive Compounds and Fatty Acid Profile of Bitter Apple Seed Oil Obtained in Hot, Arid Environments

Abstract: Bitter apple or tumba (Citrullus colocynthis L.) is a prostrate annual herb belonging to the Cucurbitaceae family. It is highly tolerant against multiple abiotic stresses like drought, heat, and soil salinity and can easily grow on very marginal soil, even on sand dunes in hot, arid regions. Tumba fruit is a fleshy berry 5–10 cm in diameter and of a pale yellow color at ripening. The tumba fruit used in this research was harvested from the ICAR-CIAH, Bikaner research farm. The seeds were separated, and their o… Show more

“…In addition, compared with Manzanilla cultivar, Adana Topagi shows the highest level of alcohols around 61.34% in which the major compound was (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol at 54.35%, which is known to give banana note [58], as for three Dalmatian indigenous cultivars [55]. The major aromatic compounds in olives are E-2-hexenal (green leaf), (Z)-3-hexenol (green leaf, green banana), and hexanal (green leaf, apple) [62][63][64][65].…”

“…The most plentiful fatty acid was found to be (1,4 Bis4' 5' Bis (Trimethylfluromethyl) 1', 3'-Dithiac, 28.40%), and the smallest amount was found in (TMS-8,11-Di-OHTetrahydrocannabinol, 5.66%), respectively. Higher dietary intakes of saturated fatty acids are associated with lower risks of pancreatic cancer, type 2 diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, adiposity, chronic inflammation, cardiovascular disease, and other diseases (Berwal et al, 2022). The values are the mean of triplicate analysis with standard deviation.…”

“…Phenolic compounds (phenolic acids, flavonoids, stilbenes, coumarins, and lignans) from herbs/plants have attracted increased attention for their various biological activities [ 2 ]. Moreover, there is growing interest in the lipid characteristics of non-conventional vegetable oils as a source of bioactive constituents and functional nutrients (phytochemicals, fat-soluble vitamins, and essential fatty acids) for human nutrition and medical applications [ 3 , 4 ].…”
