“…On one side, phytoplanktonic blooms have been associated to turbidity plumes in the Gulf of Cadiz (Caballero et al, 2014), and the primary productivity of the waters surrounding the Guadalquivir river plays a fundamental role in the anchovy fishery in this area (Ruiz et al, 2006). In the case of the Alboran Sea, Ramírez et al (2021) have described several mechanisms capable of supplying nutrients to the photic layer in the northern Alboran Sea, sustaining a primary productivity higher than that of other Mediterranean regions (García-Martínez et al, 2019a, 2019b. These two regions, connected by the Strait of Gibraltar, have very energetic dynamics that modulate phytoplanktonic populations.…”
