The Biology of Downy Brome (Bromus tectorum)

Abstract: Downy brome (Bromus tectorumL. # BROTE), also known as cheatgrass, downy chess, broncograss, Mormon oats, and junegrass, was introduced into the United States from Europe, apparently during the middle of the nineteenth century (11, 21). According to Mack (23), downy brome entered British Columbia, Washington, and Utah around 1890; and by 1928 it had reached its present range, occupying much of the perennial grassland in Washington, Idaho, Oregon, Nevada, Utah, and British Columbia. Today, downy brome is a wide… Show more

“…Invasive winter annual grass control responded to indaziflam treatments in a dose‐dependent manner. The 102 g AI ha −1 concentration is highly effective and should be strongly considered for management of invasive winter annual grasses with a short seed viability (∼3–5 years) . To achieve or increase the success of long‐term invasive winter annual grass control, it is imperative to limit the seed rain during this 3–5 year period and choose management options that provide close to 100% control.…”

“…However, Griffith & Loik () measured reduced density in plus snow plots in 2006 that persisted throughout the entire growing season, suggesting that a deeper, longer lasting snowpack may result in decreased emergence or survival. B. tectorum can respond dramatically to intraspecific competition, resulting in similar seed production on a per area basis regardless of density (Thill et al ., and references therein). Thus, even if particularly high snow years do result in reductions in B. tectorum density, these effects are likely to be temporary with minimal change in propagule pressure, and little consequence for longer term B. tectorum invasion success (Mazzola et al ., ).…”

“…Germination, growth, and development of downy brome is similar to winter wheat thus there are few effective controls in wheat (Thill et al 1984;Wicks 1984). MON 37500 is a new sulfonylurea herbicide that selectively controls the Bromus complex, including downy brome, Japanese brome (Bromus japonicus Thunb.…”
