The bismuth oxyhalide family: thin film synthesis and periodic properties

Abstract: Bismuth oxyhalides (BiOX, where X = F, Cl, Br, I) are interesting materials due to their layered structure, which can be useful for different applications. In this work, we present the synthesis of the complete BiOX family in the thin film form. The tetragonal phase Bi2O3 film deposited onto a glass substrate was transformed into BiOF, BiOCl or BiOBr by a simple immersion at ambient temperature in a halide (X = F, Cl, Br) containing solution. For these films, a residual phase from the oxide was present and for… Show more

“…57 Moreover, the relatively low price and abundancy of Bi is attractive for its large-scale applications. 58 Bulk Bi is a semimetal with large Fermi wavelengths, high magnetoresistance, and strong diamagnetism, 59 which can be used to fabricate BiNPs with different shapes and compositions. The most common ones are Bi 2 O 3 , Bi 2 S 3 , Bi 2 Se 3 , and Bi 2 Te 3 that belong to the group VI of Bi compounds, so-called Bi chalcogenides.…”

“…Due to their layered structure and high chemical stability, along with their optical, electrical, and mechanical properties, these types of materials have mainly attracted increased attention for photocatalytic activities under visible light irradiation, as well as electronics, and energy storage. 58,[62][63][64] 2 CO 3 , and BisBAL. 24,[65][66][67][68][69][70] The main characteristics, properties, and applications of the most common types of BiNPs are summarized in Table 1.…”

“…The reason why bromide appeared in the solid surface was not only the adsorption of the double electric layer of materials but also the insolubility of bismuth oxyhalide. 27 The above analysis demonstrated the synthesized Bi sample was able for direct bromate reduction.…”

“…[ 1 ] They have been widely applied as photocatalysts, [ 2 ] electrocatalysts, [ 3 ] as well as electrode materials in energy storage [ 4 ] and photoelectrochemical devices, [ 5–7 ] owing to their layered structures and excellent optical, catalytic, and electrical properties. [ 8,9 ] The layered structure and the as‐induced dipole can cause the efficient separation of the electron–hole pair, which can achieve enhanced photocatalytic activity and photoconductivity. [ 10,11 ] The low‐dimensional nanostructures of bismuth oxide halides, such as nanosheets, [ 12 ] nanonetworks, [ 13 ] microspheres, [ 14 ] and nanosheet arrays, [ 15 ] have been prepared and adopted as the sensitive materials for photoelectric devices.…”
