In this study, we hypothesized that the recordings of multichannel mechanomyography (MMG) of the upper trapezius muscle would reveal spatially dependent manifestations in the presence of delayed onset muscle soreness occurring 24 hours after eccentric exercise (ECC). Sixteen participants performed high-intensity eccentric exercises (5 sets of 10 eccentric contractions at 100% of max elevation force) targeting the upper trapezius on their dominant side. Twelve accelerometers were attached to record MMG activity during submaximal exercise consisting of static and dynamic arm flexion and abduction. Measurements were taken before and 24 hours after ECC. Average rectified value (ARV), percentage of determinism (% DET), and recurrence (% REC) of the MMG signals were computed to estimate the level of muscular activity and the magnitude of regularity of the MMG. The ARV, % REC, and % DET maps revealed heterogeneous MMG activity of the upper trapezius 24 hours after ECC when compared with before. Increased ARV, % REC, and % DET were found 24 hours after ECC when compared with before. The study provides new key information on how a single muscle responds to ECC. Our findings suggest that multichannel MMG and nonlinear analyses may detect muscular and musculo-tendinous alterations due to ECC.

A biologia é a ciência que estuda os seres vivos em relação às suas origens evoluções e funcionamentos, bem como a interação dos mesmos ao ambiente onde vivem. A anatomia é a ciência que estuda as estruturas do corpo humano e suas inter-relações. A fisiologia complementa a compreensão do corpo humano ao abordar aspectos referentes ao funcionamento de estruturas individuais e em conjunto. Este trabalho teve como objetivo 1) Demonstrar aspectos referentes à morfofisiologia de órgãos do corpo humano a alunos do ensino fundamental e médio de algumas escolas públicas de Maringá-PR complementando o ensino de ciências e 2) Montar uma exposição de maquetes anatômicas aberta à visita pública em geral, e ao final, realização de um questionário avaliativo. Os alunos participantes do projeto confeccionaram maquetes e prepararam uma apresentação específica, em linguagem adequada, direcionada aos estudantes destas instituições de ensino. Posteriormente, os mesmos montaram uma exposição das peças por eles confeccionadas as quais foram expostas na própria instituição de ensino superior à qual os alunos estavam vinculados. Conclui-se que, de forma geral, exposições de trabalhos científicos inovam a maneira de se obter e transmitir conhecimento uma vez que vão além da abordagem teórica. Portanto, tanto os envolvidos na confecção e apresentação da exposição, quanto os que visualizam o trabalho exposto são gratificados com conhecimento específico sobre o tema abordado.

[Purpose] This study examined the effects of different weight-bearing postures on the activation of the abductor hallucis muscle during foot-arch exercises. [Subjects] The study recruited 11 healthy volunteers who were pain-free, had no history of foot or ankle surgery, and were able to maintain a standing posture. [Methods] The subjects performed short-foot and toe-spreading exercises while sitting and standing. [Results] The abductor hallucis muscle activation in the toe-spreading exercise was significantly greater when standing than in sitting, while that in the short-foot exercise did not differ significantly between the two postures. [Conclusion] The results of this study suggests that a weight bearing posture such as standing is the most effective method of increasing the EMG activity of abductor hallucis muscle in the toe-spreading exercise.
