The Boolean is Dead, Long Live the Boolean! Natural Language versus Boolean Searching in Introductory Undergraduate Instruction

Abstract: Boolean logic can be a difficult concept for first-year, introductory students to grasp. This paper compares the results of Boolean and natural language searching across several databases with searches created from student research questions. Performance differences between databases varied. Overall, natural search language is at least as good as Boolean searching. With evidence that students struggle to grasp Boolean searching, and may not use it even after instruction, it could be left out of first-year inst… Show more

“…As this was not a review of discovery layers, searching them was outside the scope of this project and, regardless of which databases were, or were not searched, the purpose of the study was to determine whether advanced Boolean OR should be used, the databases were a means to an end, not the focal point. Even in a web discovery world, Boolean is still being taught, and some (for example, Lowe et al, 2018; Boolean Redux 6 Seeber, 2015) argue librarians should spend more time on other skills like critical evaluation.…”

“…Several areas of the literature are relevant to this research and build on the literature review from the original study (Lowe et al, 2018). Areas important to highlight focus on upper-level, or Boolean Redux 3 more advanced, undergraduate and graduate students around: the complexity of Boolean logic for students; and, their research habits, including information and research needs.…”

“…In the most simple method, a single researcher reviews the results and determines if they are relevant based on a predefined scope and individual expertise (Joseph 2007;Sewell 2011). Some studies use a point system with specified criteria to compile a total score (Shafi & Rather 2005;Stokes et al 2009;Lowe et al 2018). Other studies use simple binary relevance judgments (yes/no) made by multiple reviewers to determine a total or averaged score for each set of search results (McCain et al 1987;Deka & Lahkar 2010).…”
