“…1) near the headwaters of the Broken Skull River. I had hoped to sample the fossiliferous deeper-water equivalents of the Sunblood, Esbataottine, and lower Whittaker formations that are exposed farther to the east in the Mackenzie Mountains ((Ludvigsen, 1975;1979b). This hope was not realized.…”

“…These formations are poorly dated. Scattered fossil collections suggest that each spans the interval of, at least, Franconian to Canadian (Norford and Macqueen, 1975;Gabrielse et al, 1973;Ludvigsen, 1975;Tipnis et al, 1979 (Fig. 1).…”

“…Three formations of Late Cambrian and Early Ordovician age are exposed on the Mackenzie Platform, a stable tectonic element which received dominantly shallowwater sediments from the Helikian to the Late Devonian (Gabrielse, 1967): the Franklin Mountain Formation in the Mackenzie Valley (Norford and Macqueen, 1975), the Broken Skull Formation in the eastern and central Mackenzie Mountains (Gabrielse et al, 1973;Ludvigsen, 1975), and the Rabbitkettle Formation in the western Mackenzie Mountains and the Selwyn Mountains (Gabrielse et al, 1973).…”

“…As a result, the affinity of this biota to other regions has not been fully evaluated, despite the possibility that this biota may contain taxa that show this region to be transitional between Europe and North America. The recognition of Warrenella grinnellensis Li and Jones in Arctic Canada supported such faunal exchange route because this species possesses features of both the Occidentalis and Franklinii lineages of Warrenella recognized by Ludvigsen and Perry (1975) (Li and Jones 2003). “…During the Devonian, the Canadian Arctic was a biogeographically important region because it may have been the route by which faunal exchanges between North America and Europe took place (e.g., Ludvigsen and Perry 1975;Oliver 2006). A full assessment of this possibility is greatly hindered by the general paucity of faunal information from Arctic Canada, an issue that can be attributed largely to the remote nature of the area.…”
