The aim of this research was to evaluate the surface temperature and sensible heat emission of Japanese quails kept in a climate chamber at different temperatures: 24.0, 27.0, 30.0 and 33.0°C. The surface temperature was obtained using thermographic images collected in five regions (head, wings, back, legs and crest), calculating the average surface temperature (ST), the gradient between ST and air temperature (AT) and heat emissions by convection and radiation. The experimental design used was entirely randomised, with four treatments and six replications. Surface temperature in all regions of the birds' bodies and ST rose as air temperature rose, and the gradient between ST and AT decreased as AT rose, a fact which can make it difficult for the animals to exchange sensible heat with the environment. The crest and feet had the highest and lowest ST values, respectively. The heat emitted by the birds through convection and radiation decreases as the ambient temperature rises, and of the total heat emitted, there was a predominance of convection.

Drylands represent a significant part of the Earth's surface and include essential and vulnerable ecosystems for the global ecological balance. The Caatinga, with its unique biodiversity adapted to the extreme conditions of this semi-arid region, offers a valuable opportunity to expand our knowledge about these ecosystems. Here, this work reveals the high microbial diversity in the soil and rhizosphere of the Caatinga, with the roots presenting more specialized communities. Bacteria such as Bacilli, Alphaproteobacteria and Firmicutes excelled in critical functions such as nutrient cycling. Interplant differences suggested the influence of root exudates. The metagenomic study of interactions between microorganisms in the rhizosphere of selected plants revealed microbial biodiversity and contributed to our understanding of nutrient cycling, plant growth and resistance to water stress. In addition, they demonstrate biotechnological potential to address global challenges such as desertification and food security.

Maps of soil and vegetation carbon stock dynamics resulting from changes in land use in tropical dry areas are still scarce and virtually absent for the Brazilian Northeast region. The few data available were built on a scale that does not allow their use for decision-making and precision farming applications. Based on soil and land use data, we developed a geographical information system to estimate and map carbon balances in the large (86.135 km2) semiarid region of Pernambuco state, Brazil. Maps of carbon stocks for soil and vegetation for the years 2000 and 2016 were created on the scale of 1: 100000, stratified by land use and soil types. In this period, 28% of the area had decreases in soil and vegetation C stocks, 57% had no significant changes and only 13% had increases. Most of the change was associated with converting the open native forest vegetation (Caatinga) into pastures. The net C loss was 291 million Mg, representing an average loss of 2 Mg C ha-1 year-1. Water bodies, urban areas, and other unclassified uses were not accounted for but amounted to only 2% of the area. Overall, the method proved to be a fast and feasible approach to monitoring carbon balances derived from land use changes on a regional scale.
