The burden of dengue, source reduction measures, and serotype patterns in Myanmar, 2011 to 2015–R2

Abstract: BackgroundMyanmar is currently classified as a high burden dengue country in the Asian Pacific region. The Myanmar vector-borne diseases control (VBDC) program has collected data on dengue and source reduction measures since 1970, and there is a pressing need to collate, analyze, and interpret this information. The aim of this study was to describe the burden of hospital-based dengue disease, dengue control measures, and serotype patterns in Myanmar between 2011 and 2015.MethodsThis was a cross-sectional study… Show more

“…However, a recent report of increasing resistance of two important JE vectors (Culex tritaeniorhymchus and Culex vishnui) to DDT, malathion, and deltamethrin in India is of concern to the region [31]. Case fatality was higher in the hills, similar to what was found 2 years ago with dengue [21]. This may be because health facilities are not as well-resourced in these areas, health care workers are less experienced in providing supportive care for encephalitis, and there is poor immunity of the population to the JE virus.…”

“…This was an ecological study, and we therefore did not capture any information about morbidity after recovery from the infection. Previous reviews point to significant neurological sequelae being present in up to 50% of survivors [3,23], so while this disease is less common in the country than dengue [21], it may nevertheless be very demanding on health service care and resources. While care is currently supportive, there is an ongoing work exploring the prospects for direct-acting antiviral treatment, especially with the use of nucleoside and nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors [24,25].…”

“…Myanmar is a high dengue burden country in the Asia Pacific Region. Between 2011 and 2015, of the 89,832 dengue related admissions, 97% were children 13 . There is limited published literature on diagnosis delays after fever onset among children or adults who died due to dengue.…”

“…Dengue fever outbreaks routinely and progressively happen each year in South and Pacific Asian countries including India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, and Malaysia [8]. India and Myanmar have also been severely affected by dengue outbreaks in recent years with 21,000 cases in 2015 and 89,832 cases in 2011-2015, respectively [9,10].…”
