The Calculation Approach for the Setting of Precautionary Areas of Offshore Platforms Based on Turning Ability of Vessels

Abstract: Abstract-As the development of maritime resources with growing enthusiasm, quantity of offshore platforms are put into use. However, the installation of offshore platforms tends to impede navigation and fishing activities. To ensure the safety of platforms and nearby vessels, it is necessary to set the precautionary areas which have a broad range for offshore platforms, we propose one approach named "Tactical Diameter Method" to calculate the range for the precautionary areas based on the turning ability of th… Show more

“…The inertial deceleration stage means moving along the original track under the action of inertia force; the drifting stage means drifting under the combined action of wind and current after inertia force disappeared. 3,7,11 The value of the warning zone of drilling platform can be obtained by calculating the drift component of the ship in the longitudinal and transverse directions, together with the radius of the warning area of 500 m. If the ship does not collide with the platform in both transverse direction and longitudinal direction when out of control, it can pass through the platform safely. According to the results, it is reasonable that the radius of the warning zone takes the larger value of transverse drift distance and longitudinal drift distance.…”

“…In addition, it is difficult to quantify human factors such as psychological quality and operational habits of seafarers in ship motion model and the calculation. [3][4][5][6][7] Previous results have certain limitations and are not convincing. Therefore, it is necessary to improve the method of calculating the safe distance between passing ship and platform based on existing theories and achievements.…”
