The carbon budget of the managed grasslands of Great Britain – informed by earth observations

Abstract: Abstract. Grasslands cover around two-thirds of the agricultural land area of Great Britain (GB) and are important reservoirs of organic carbon (C). Direct assessments of the C balance of grasslands require continuous monitoring of C pools and fluxes, which is only possible at a small number of experimental sites. By relying on our quantitative understanding of ecosystem C biogeochemistry we develop models of grassland C dynamics and use them to estimate grassland C balance at various scales. Model-based estim… Show more

“…CARDAMOM has been successfully tested for its ability to accurately estimate carbon and water fluxes at over 200 flux towers from the FLUXNET 2015 dataset (Yang et al., 2021). Finally, CARDAMOM has been used in many studies to constrain or estimate ecosystem processes or quantities that are not directly measured (e.g., Ma, Bloom, et al., 2023; Myrgiotis et al., 2022; Quetin et al., 2023; Smallman et al., 2021).…”

“…It is plausible that farmers still mowed their grasslands even though plant growth and, consequently, yields were reduced due to the dry and hot weather conditions. It was shown that climate extremes and management have an impact on the role of grasslands acting as a carbon sink or source, highlighting that management information needs to be considered when modelling grassland carbon balance (Myrgiotis et al, 2022).…”
