The carbon emission and life expectancy nexus: mediating roles of agriculture and foreign direct investment in Nigeria

Abstract: PurposeThis study evaluates the impact of carbon emission on life expectancy in Nigeria. The study also investigates the mediating role of agricultural output and foreign direct investment as suggested by the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) and the pollution haven hypothesis (PHH), respectively.Design/methodology/approachThe hypotheses and theories were tested using structural equation modeling (SEM). Primary data were collected using cross-sectional survey design. Questionnaires were distributed and respons… Show more

“…This result echoes the work done by Murthy et al (2021) on the relation between life expectancy and carbon emissions by considering a dataset from 2000 to 2016, which indicates that an increase in carbon emissions leads to decrease life expectancy in 54 selected countries. Also, our results confirm the study of the West et al (2016), Steinberger et al (2020), Landrigan et al (2020), Poças et al (2020), Nwani and Imhanzenobe (2022) and Salehnia et al (2022). Also, Hill et al (2019) confirm that carbon emissions is one the major environment factors that causes high mortality rates spread respiratory diseases and blood clotting within all fragments of society in the world.…”

“…Sparingly, studies on the relationship between air pollution and life expectancy in the Niger Delta region (Giwa et al, 2019;Nriagu et al, 2016;Oghenetega et al, 2019;Osuoha and Fakutiju, 2017;Seiyaboh and Izah, 2017;Nwani and Imhanzenobe, 2022) neglected the roles of knowledge and coping strategy. The choice of these variables was informed by the constant pollution related illness due to lack of awareness, continued attraction of FDI into the oil producing communities and declining agricultural activities.…”
