The CBM Time-of-Flight system

Abstract: A: The Compressed Baryonic Matter spectrometer (CBM) is a future fixed-target heavy-ion experiment located at the Facility for Anti-proton and Ion Research (FAIR) in Darmstadt, Germany. The key element in CBM providing hadron identification at incident beam energies between 2 and 11 AGeV (for Au-nuclei) will be a 120 m 2 large Time-of-Flight (ToF) wall composed of Multi-gap Resistive Plate Chambers (MRPC) with a system time resolution better than 80 ps. Aiming for an interaction rate of 10 MHz for Au+Au collisi… Show more

“…The CBM ToF wall [62,63] is currently under development and construction, and it is designed to be composed of MRPC detectors. To achieve hadron identification of momentum of 4 GeV/c, a system time resolution below 80 ps and efficiency above 95% are required.…”

High-Rate MRPC Towards the particle flux ranges from 1-5 kHz/cm 2 in the intermediate rate region [63], the double-stack MRPC prototype [26] developed at Tsinghua University has been considered. It is built The high-performance electronics for the whole CBM ToF wall is based on the PADI [69] and the GET4-ASIC chips [70].…”

“…It consists out of 5 so called M4 CBM full size modules (see right side of Fig. 1) housing 5 MRPC2 (formerly called MRPC3a [6,7]) counter each. Each module has an active area of 152×27 cm 2 and comprises 320 read out channels.…”

“…The right side of Figure 1 shows an event display of a high multiplicity Pb on Au event generating 100 hits in mTOF of which 28 tracks could be reconstructed, demonstrating the capability of this facility to test MRPC detectors at high rates in a multi-hit environment and under full counter illumination. During the beam time campaign in March 2020 a chamber housing two MRPC3 prototypes (former MRPC3b [6,9]) equipped with ultra thin float glass electrodes (here called counter 900 and 901) was installed behind the double stack. The aim was to measure the rate capability of these counters which are supposed to be located at the outermost region of the CBM TOF wall [10] where the incident particle flux is below 1 kHz/cm 2 .…”
