A survey was conducted to determine the density and species composition of viable seeds buried in four stands of a tropical montane forest at Parque Estadual Intervales, Brazil. The objective was to understand: (1) how numbers and composition of the soil seed bank change as the forest regrows, and (2) how such changes affect the species available for regeneration if forests of different ages are cut down. In each forest stand (5, 18, 27-yr-old and a mature forest), 57 soil samples were collected (0-2.5 and 2.5-5 cm deep). Viable seed density of herbaceous species ranged between 11,003 seeds. m -2(5-yr-old vegetation) and 482 (mature forest), and between 25 (5-yr-old vegetation) and 389 seeds. m -2 (mature forest) for woody plant species in the 0-5 cm soil layer, suggesting a decrease in seed stocks in the course of forest regeneration. Seeds buried in the 0-2.5 cm soil layer represented between 56.9% and 67.4% of all viable seeds. Most of the viable seeds belonged to weeds of Asteraceae, Poaceae, Malvaceae and Solanaceae. The results provide evidence that, in forests of different ages, the soil does not store seeds of the same key ecological groups involved in the regeneration of Atlantic forest. Allochthonous seeds from remaining patches of forest, as well as their vertebrate dispersers, are needed for forest regeneration since the soil seed bank does not store large seeds of shade-tolerant species.Key words: Atlantic Forest, Brazil, forest regeneration, pioneer species, soil seed bank. RESUMO O banco de sementes do solo durante a regeneração da floresta Atlântica no sudeste do BrasilEste estudo foi realizado com a finalidade de determinar a densidade de sementes viáveis e a composição de espécies no banco de sementes de quatro trechos de Floresta Atlântica com diferentes idades no Parque Estadual Intervales, SP. Duas questões foram abordadas: (1) como o número e a composição de espécies muda ao longo do tempo e (2) quais as implicações dessas mudanças para o processo de regeneração da floresta após corte e queima. Em cada trecho de floresta (5, 18, 27 anos e floresta madura), 57 amostras de solo foram coletadas entre 0 e 5 cm de profundidade. A densidade de sementes viáveis das espécies herbáceas variou entre 11.003 (vegeteção com 5 anos) e 482 sementes/m 2 (floresta madura); e a das espé-cies lenhosas entre 25 (vegeteção com 5 anos) e 389 sementes/m 2 (floresta madura). As densidades encontradas sugerem um decréscimo no estoque de sementes no solo com o avanço da regeneração. Sementes enterradas entre 0 e 2,5 cm de profundidade representaram entre 56,9% e 67,4% das sementes. A maioria das sementes pertence a plantas invasoras das famílias Asteraceae, Poaceae, Malvaceae e Solanaceae. Os resultados encontrados são evidências de que a contribuição do banco de sementes para a regeneração da floresta depende da idade em que esta é cortada. RESUMO -O objetivo deste trabalho foi caracterizar o banco de sementes de um trecho de Floresta Estacional Semidecidual Secundária, por meio da análise florística e da densidade de sementes. Denominado Mata da Praça de Esportes, o fragmento está situado no Campus da UFV, em Viçosa, MG, cuja área corresponde a 10,65 ha em regeneração há 75 anos. A área amostral foi subdividida em 40 parcelas de 3 x 5 m, distribuídas em quatro transectos paralelos. Amostras compostas foram feitas em 20 dessas parcelas e posteriormente distribuídas dentro de 40 caixas de madeira, em viveiro. O montante foi dividido, submetendo-se cada metade a sombreamentos de 11,5% e 60%. A germinação total e das espécies arbustivo-arbóreas foi comparada nas duas condições de sombreamento, utilizando-se o teste t para amostras independentes. O banco de sementes foi constituído predominantemente por ervas invasoras, pertencentes, em sua maioria, às famílias Asteraceae (15 espécies), Solanaceae (4 espécies) e Poaceae (3 espécies). Foram quantificadas 5.194 plântulas, com predomínio das pioneiras arbustivo-arbóreas das famílias Melastomataceae e Cecropiaceae. A germinação das sementes conduzida sob sombra foi significativamente maior do que no ambiente de menor sombreamento (luz). Espécies zoocóricas foram mais abundantes, indicando a importância dos fragmentos florestais como fonte de recurso e abrigo para a fauna local. A alta densidade de indivíduos de espécies arbóreas e arbustivas pioneiras, como Cecropia hololeuca, as espécies de Melastomataceae, Asteraceae e Piperaceae, importantes para a regeneração da floresta, reflete a capacidade de resiliência da área estudada, na ocorrência de distúrbios.Palavras-chave: Ecologia de sementes, Densidade de sementes e Germinação. Field trials were conducted on Amazonian Dark Earth soils in the Manaus region, Amazonas, Brazil to assess the composition and impact of weedy vegetation on maize yield. Soil fertility among the Dark Earth varied considerably with differences largely attributable to past-use history. Consequently, maize yield and weed pressure varied among field locations, reflecting these differences in soil fertility in addition to differences in weed reservoirs such as seedbanks. Maize yield in weeded plots was as much as 63 times greater on Dark Earth (0.55 t ha À1) than on corresponding adjacent soil (0 t ha À1 ), and location averages varied from 0 to 3.15 t ha À1 for Dark Earth. The percentage ground cover of weeds in weedy plots was up to 45 times greater on Dark Earth (65-99%) than on corresponding adjacent soil (2-89%), and species richness was up to 11 times greater on Dark Earth (4-14 species) than corresponding adjacent soil (1-8 species). The relative proportion of annual and leguminous weeds was 32 and 17% greater, respectively, on Dark Earth than adjacent soil, and vegetative sprouting of plants was more common on sites that had been used less intensively in the past. In general, a similar weed community was observed on the different Dark Earth sites, including many species typically associated with environments that have been highly disturbed by human activities, such as Cyperus spp., Phyllantus niuri, and Croton lobatus. Seedlings from a greater number of species emerged from forested Dark Earth seedbanks (2.1 per flat) than from forested adjacent soil (1.2 per flat). The total number of emerged seedlings was greater for Dark Earth seedbanks (9.1 per flat, 1,365 m À2 ) than adjacent soil (2.2 per flat, 330 m À2), however the species observed were not likely to be problematic for cropping. #
