The Central Canyon depositional patterns and filling process in east of Lingshui Depression, Qiongdongnan Basin, northern South China Sea

Abstract: Central canyons are considered to be important conduits for the transfer of sediment to the abyssal plains. High‐resolution 3D seismic data and logging data from the east of Lingshui Depression are used to investigate the depositional elements, patterns, and filling processes of central canyon in the Qiongdongnan Basin, northern South China Sea. The Central Canyon in this segment is 30 km wide and more than 1,000 m deep. It was found to be characterized by being subparallel to the continental shelf. In this st… Show more

“…In the study area, the paleo-channels below modern across-slope channels commonly contain channel-fill deposits with chaotic and high amplitude seismic reflections onlapping the bases of paleo-channels (Figures 3b and S4 in Supporting Information S1). These are typical seismic facies indicating the presence of gravity flow deposits (Figures 3b and S4 in Supporting Information S1) (Wu et al, 2018).…”

“…Submarine channels respond to sea-level change, sediment flux, tectonics, and climate, and have a significant impact on the sedimentary architecture of continental margins (Reading and Richards, 1994;Wu et al, 2018). Several factors can be suggested as the principal controls on the development of the Late Cretaceous submarine channel system in the study area.…”

“…Examples of lobate deposits underlying a channel system in unconfined settings are well-documented (Gardner et al, 2003;Hodgson et al, 2011Hodgson et al, , 2016Macdonald et al, 2011), and lobes overlying individual channel complexes are associated with the 'spill' phase of channel development (Eschard et al, 2003;Gardner et al, 2003), and are unconfined. Lobes within the same confining surface as axial fill are undocumented, but semi-confined lobes have been documented in canyon settings in the South China Sea (Wu et al, 2018) and offshore Egypt (Morris et al, 2014).…”
