The challenges, approaches, and used techniques of CPS for manufacturing in Industry 4.0: a literature review

Abstract: This work aims to review literature related to the latest cyber-physical systems (CPS) for manufacturing in the revolutionary Industry 4.0 for a comprehensive understanding of the challenges, approaches, and used techniques in this domain. Different published studies on CPS for manufacturing in Industry 4.0 paradigms through 2010 to 2019 were searched and summarized. We, then, analyzed the studies at a different granularity level inspecting the title, abstract, and full text to include in the prospective study… Show more

“…The data generated by the different resources during the production process is analyzed and converted in useful knowledge to be used in different scales to continuously improve and optimize the production process, for example, by using big data analytics and artificial intelligence algorithms [13]. CPPS can provide virtual capabilities to every physical component, high degree of automation, reconfiguring capabilities, interaction between components at different scales and integration at different spatial and temporal scales [14]. Although these concepts are not completely new in manufacturing systems, only now, with the advances in ICT, they are becoming reliable.…”

“…CPPS has two main functional components: advanced connectivity to ensure real-time data acquisition and analytics and computational capabilities (Monostori et al, 2016). Previous studies have discuses CPS, IoT, and cyber-physical production systems (CPPS) (Dafflon et al, 2021;Monostori et al, 2016;Wright, 2014). Zhao et al (2020) adopted collaborative tracking using IoT, edge computing technology, and supervised learning of genetic tracking methods to track and locate a material trolley in real-time at the airconditioner manufacturer in China.…”

“…Using technological capabilities to combine single production machines to temporary groups performing tasks jointly shall enable meeting individual customer needs and lead to competitive advantages. However, anomalous behavior in one machine may propagate to connected group members [6]. Finding anomalies' roots is more complex in flexible configurations consisting of multiple machines [19].…”
