In Wastewater Stabilization Ponds (WSPs), baffle walls (BWs) have the dual benefit of reducing area requirements and increasing contaminant removal efficiency up to a certain threshold. However, this advantage is mitigated by the increased demand for construction materials, highlighting the need for optimization. Effectively optimizing WSPs to suit diverse climatic regions can substantially alleviate nationwide wastewater treatment challenges. This study focuses on optimizing WSPs across seven distinct climatic regions in Turkey. In the initial phase, a comprehensive analysis was conducted using design spreadsheets for the WSPs to determine the best configuration based on traditional methodology (TM). The results demonstrated a significant decrease in WSPs area and hydraulic retention time (RT), validating the effectiveness of BWs provision. However, this approach requires additional time and effort. Subsequently, mathematical modeling (MM) was used to further reduce the time required for the optimization process. Using the interior-point algorithm in MATLAB and the generalized reduced gradient (GRG) algorithm in MS Excel Solver, both algorithms within MM effectively decreased the WSPs area and RTby approximately 10%, while decreasing the required concrete volume by approximately 5% compared with TM. Kentleşme çevre, toplum ve insan yaşam kalitesini birçok yönden etkilemektedir. Kentsel büyümenin temel özelliklerinden birisi de büyük kentler ile yakın çevresinde yer alan peyzaj üzerinde baskı oluşturan kentsel yayılmadır. Bu çalışmanın amacı açık erişimli veriler yardımıyla İzmir merkez ilçeleri örneğinde kentsel yayılma sürecinin mekânsal metrikler ile analiz edilip değerlendirilmesidir. Çalışmada 1990, 2006 ve 2018 yıllarına ait CORINE arazi örtüsü verileri kullanılarak 1990, 1990-2006, 2006-2018 yıllarına ait kentsel morfolojik bölgeler (kentsel çekirdek, genişlemiş kentsel çekirdek ve büyüme zonu) tanımlanmış ve bu bölgelerde meydana gelen değişimler FRAGSTATS v4.2.1 yazılımında sınıf düzeyi peyzaj metrikleri aracılığıyla hesaplanmıştır. Kentsel morfolojik özelliklerin ve kentsel yayılmanın tespit edilebilmesi alan/kenar, şekil ve kümelenme metrikleri kategorileri altında 8 peyzaj metriği kullanılmıştır. Çalışma sonucunda İzmir kenti merkez ilçelerinde 1990 yılından 2018 yılına kadar ciddi düzeyde kentsel yayılmanın meydana geldiği görülmüştür. Bununla birlikte yaşanan kentsel yayılma sürecinde en şiddetli dönemin 1990 ve 2006 yılları arasında yaşandığı tespit edilmiştir. 2006 ve 2018 yılları arasında ise kentsel yayılma daha çok saçaklanma şeklinde daha dağınık ve parçalı şekilde kendini göstermiştir.

River deltas have been ideal locations for thriving port cities; yet, the march of industrialization and urban expansion has brought significant environmental challenges. This chapter focuses on Izmir, a port city in Turkey, formerly known as Smyrna. It explores its transition from a vibrant coastal marsh to a heavily urbanized industrial area facing ecological issues. The Meles River, a key feature of İzmir’s development, now experiences major problems, including flooding, pollution, and habitat destruction, exacerbated by poor stormwater management and unchecked urban growth. The chapter proposes strategies for adopting a multifaceted approach. Key strategies include integrating green infrastructure, restoring the river’s natural state through rewilding, and updating policies to manage urban and environmental needs. By enhancing community engagement and securing diverse funding sources, İzmir can transform the Meles River into a model of social, ecological, and economic sustainability.
