The changing landscape of rabies epidemiology and control

Abstract: Over the past 20 years, major progress has been made in our understanding of critical aspects of rabies epidemiology and control. This paper presents results of recent research, highlighting methodological advances that have been applied to burden of disease studies, rabies epidemiological modelling and rabies surveillance. These results contribute new insights and understanding with regard to the epidemiology of rabies and help to counteract misperceptions that currently hamper rabies control efforts in Afric… Show more

“…Besides the fact that medical intervention, i.e., PEP, is not targeted without laboratory confirmation, lack of surveillance data is also one essential component that drives the vicious circle of neglect. Inaccurately low human and animal rabies case numbers belie the strong need for action [15,16].…”

“…Additionally, the disease is estimated to cause over 3.7 million (95% CI: 1.6-10.4 million) disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) and 8.6 billion USD (95% CI: 2.9-21.5 billion) in economic losses annually 1 . These human and economic losses occur despite the existence of effective anti-rabies vaccines for humans and animals and data that supports the feasibility of dog-rabies elimination 3,4 .…”

“…Sikkim is a small Himalayan state in North East India bordered by Nepal, China, and Bhutan (Figure 1), with a population of 610,000 (2011 census) (6). The core components of the Sikkim Anti-Rabies and Animal Health (SARAH) program (the Program) are canine rabies vaccination, dog population management, and rabies prevention education, which have been shown to control and prevent rabies leading to elimination (7, 8). It also provides health care to street dogs and aims to foster a compassionate attitude toward all animals.…”
