The Characteristic and Short-Term Prognosis of Tinnitus Associated with Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss

Abstract: Tinnitus is believed to result from the maladaptive plasticity of the auditory nervous system; reports regarding its severity and prognosis are conflicting. We evaluated the characteristic and short-term prognosis of tinnitus associated with sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL). A total of 230 cases were enrolled. The severity and 1-month prognosis of tinnitus (according to the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI)) were assessed in terms of the patients' sex, age, level of hearing loss, type of audiogram res… Show more

“…Based on the visual analogue scale, the secondary outcomes include improvement of adherence to TCM lifestyle and evaluation of changes in WRS [21], Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) [22] for patients with tinnitus and change in common symptoms, such as dizziness and ear blockage. These outcomes are measured at the first visit and during protocol visits.…”

“…A meta-analysis of 11 studies with 314 individuals distressed by tinnitus who were randomly allocated to a waiting period of 6-12 weeks revealed mean decreases in symptoms of 3% to 8% (21). The short-term prognosis of tinnitus may be related to a decrease in the reaction (12)(13)(14). As hearing loss improves, their psychological reaction to tinnitus decreases.…”

“…Tinnitus in SSNHL patients often lasts for more than 6 months. Although several studies have focused on the prognosis of tinnitus accompanied by SSNHL, the follow-up times were mostly within 1 year (12)(13)(14)(15)(16). Therefore, we investigated the long-term outcomes of tinnitus in 161 patients with SSNHL after standard treatments.…”
