The characteristics of psychiatric patients readmitted within a month of discharge

Abstract: synopsisFrom the Camberwell Register it was found that 9–14% of all admissions in the years 1965–70 were readmissions within a month of discharge. The characteristics of these patients were compared with the total population admitted. No particular diagnostic category was associated with rapid readmissions but the rapidly readmitted group contained a high proportion of young patients and divorced or separated patients. The case notes of rapidly readmitted patients were examined and compared with the case notes … Show more

“…In our study, 55.56% of the patients had had more than one previous admissions which is slightly higher than the result (44%) of other studies, Behere et al [ [11], which were conducted in general psychiatric patients. As also studied in India by Malhotra et al [7] and Behere et al [16], the percentage of more than one previous admission is 35 and 23 respectively.…”

“…Our findings suggest a longer duration of hospital stay during rehospitalizations which is in accordance with the findings of Malhotra et al [7] in 1982 who concluded that hospital stay of rehospitalizations was longer in general hospital psychiatric unit. Rosenblatt and Mayer [15], Marks [11], contend that rehospitalizations are consistently correlated with short length of hospital stay than previous admissions.…”

“…Readmissions have been taken as a sign of failure of outpatient care both to the patients and to the medical staff, and comparisons of readmission rates of different institutions are often taken as one of the criteria of their relative successful treatment (Marks, 1977) Even though the term 'Revolving Door' has been generally used to define patients with chronic psychiatric disorders that require multiple hospitalizations, many authors have used different RD criteria. These inconsistencies pose practical problems for the development of policies that require a specific, constant and operational definition, allowing the identification of patients at risk and their needs and planning effective programs for them (Bachrach, 1988).…”

“…There is no consensus on what time period defines a "failed discharge" which makes it difficult to compare rates; authors have adopted definitions of one month, three months, six months and even 12 months. According to the Camberwell Register, 9-14% of all admissions during 1965-70 were readmissions within one month of discharge (Marks, 1977).…”
