The Characteristics of Surface Albedo Change Trends over the Antarctic Sea Ice Region during Recent Decades

Abstract: Based on a long-time series (1982–2015) of remote sensing data, we analyzed the change in surface albedo (SAL) during summer (from December to the following February) for the entire Antarctic Sea Ice Region (ASIR) and five longitudinal sectors around Antarctica: (1). the Weddell Sea (WS), (2). Indian Ocean, (3). Pacific Ocean (PO), (4). Ross Sea, and (5). Bellingshausen–Amundsen Sea (BS). Empirical mode decomposition was used to extract the trend of the original signal, and then a slope test method was utilize… Show more

“…The sea ice zone surrounding Antarctica shows strong seasonal variability [ 101 , 102 , 135 ]. There has been marked interannual variability during the last four decades, particularly in the last years, with regionally opposing patterns of change [Chapter 2 of 63].…”

“…Current studies on surface albedo in polar regions are primarily focused on the Arctic, with fewer dedicated to Antarctica. As the Antarctic Ice Sheet (AIS) is almost entirely covered by high-albedo snow and ice [1], its surface can reflect most of the solar radiation back to the atmosphere and space [2,3]. As a result, even minor changes in surface albedo can profoundly impact the ice sheet surface energy budget.…”

“…Because the quantification of LSA is closely associated with the appraisal of several climate effect phenomena, LSA has been observed in various ways in recent decades [10][11][12][13][14]. Satellite remote sensing, among others, is a unique and effective tool that provides globally consistent LSA characteristics at high spatial and temporal resolution [15].…”
