This study attempts to identify the significant role played by the secondary structure of collagen-derived peptides that are involved in lipid peroxide quenching in food products. Collagen was extracted from the skin of Perch and swim bladder of Rohu at 45-78% efficiency. It was identified as type-I based on a high molecular weight (110kDa) and its ion-exchange elution profile. The collagen samples were enzymatically hydrolyzed and collagen hydrolysate (CH) was extracted with an efficiency of 0.67-0.74g/g of collagen. The CH samples displayed a molecular weight in the range of 8.2-9.7kDa and exhibited a higher abundance of charges resulting in higher solubility. The structural studies revealed that the CH peptides existed in polyproline-II helix and formed a mimic-triple helix in a wide range of pH. In neutral and alkaline pH, the mimic helices joined to form a hierarchical quasi-fibrillar network that was smaller than collagen fibrils but also more dynamic. The CH exhibited >95% degradation in 15h through simulated digestion. The CH were able to decrease peroxide formation by 84.5-98.9% in commercially available cod liver and almond oil and increased the shelf life of soya bean oil by a factor of 5 after 6 months of storage. The addition of CH to cultured cells quenched peroxide ions generated in situ and decreased stressor activity by a factor of 12. The reason behind the high efficacy of CH was deciphered to be the proximal charge stabilization by the quasi-fibrillar network, which allowed efficient peroxide quenching and long-term stability.

BACKGROUND Acrylic acid has a wide range of applications in plastic additives, textiles, sealants, adhesives, and surface coatings industries. Owing to its widespread demand, production through a biotechnological method has emerged as low‐cost, energy‐efficient, environment friendly with few challenges at downstream stage. Reactive extraction is a promising method to recover carboxylic acid, but suffers from toxicity problems of the diluent and extractant employed. Therefore, there is a need for a nontoxic extractant and diluent or a combination of less toxic extractants in a nontoxic diluent that can recover acid efficiently. In this context, reactive extraction of acrylic acid from aqueous phase was employed with tri‐n‐butyl phosphate dissolved in natural diluents soybean oil, sunflower oil, and rice bran oil. RESULTS Reactive extraction results are discussed in terms of the partition coefficient (α), dimerization constant (β), distribution coefficient (KD), extraction efficiency (η%), overall equilibrium complexation constant (KE), and loading ratio (ϕs). Higher distribution coefficient and extraction efficiency range was found in tri‐n‐butyl phosphate (TBP) + sunflower oil as 0.672 to 2.019 and 39.76 to 66.49, respectively. Average extraction efficiency was in the range 30.85 to 71.94% for soybean oil, 39.76 to 66.49% for sunflower oil, and 31.27 to 69.42% for rice bran oil with 0.366 to 1.464 mol kg−1 of tri‐n‐butyl phosphate. CONCLUSION Sunflower oil with tri‐n‐butyl phosphate showed higher extraction efficiency for the reactive extraction of acrylic acid. The order of extraction efficiency was observed as: TBP+sunflower oil > TBP+soybean oil > TBP+rice bran oil. Since evasion of direct contact of the organism with the organic phase or use of nontoxic diluents can substantially reduce toxic effects, natural oils were used in the present study. Reactive extraction results can be employed for the design of extraction columns. © 2017 Society of Chemical Industry

This article addresses the basic concepts of herbal technology which is used worldwide. 21 st century is the century of Biology mechanical and propelled by scientific knowledge and hi-tech expertise. Herbal technology, are going to be the most influential elements that are fundamental for success and welfare for the people of nations. Information on the herbal technology was collected via electronic search (using pub med, scifinder, Google Scholar and web of science) and library search for articles published in peer-reviewed journals. Furthermore, information also was obtained from some local books on ethnopharmacology. Nutraceutical are food or part of the food that grant medical or health benefits together with the prevention or cure of the disease. Cosmaceuticals are the largest accumulation to the health trade and are described as cosmetic products with drug; they are the fastest increased segment in the skin care market. Biopesticides are cost effective, safer, readily available, and ecological and therefore more environment-friendly and will offer substitute to conventional pesticides. Herbal drugs represent a major contribute to all the formally recognized systems of health in India. An upward trend has been experimental in the research on herbals. Export-Import reports reveal that the global trade of herbal technology and plant originated products is around US $250 billion. In the present article, an attempt has been made to present an overview of the herbal technology in the international market and intends to throw in the knowledge about Herbal drugs, Nutraceuticals, Cosmaceuticals, and Biopesticides which comes under herbal technology.
